Every Monday we will be bringing you an unsigned singer or band as part of our Independent Music Monday feature. This week, we caught up with indie/alternative rock band Bel Esprit from Southampton to find out more about them…
Who is in the band, how did you meet, where are you from and how did you come up with the band name?
The band are Billy, Sachin, George and Fahad. We’re all from Southampton and we met at school and college. The name comes from a from a fund Ezra Pound made for TS Eliot so he could write poetry full time. So Bel Esprit seemed a fitting name for four students trying to make a name for themselves!
We love Leave Me Here, what was the influence behind it?
Leave Me Here is essentially inspired by the kind of raw emotion that can manifest late at night when you’re alone and thinking of someone too far away to reach. It definitely has a grungier feel than our other tracks.
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
Most of the band have pretty varied influences from indie rock to hip hop and jazz/blues. We bonded strongly over bands like The Velvet Underground, The Beatles, The Strokes, Pixies, The Smiths, The Cure and loads of others.
How would you describe your sound?
A bit all over the place, mostly catchy melodies, energy and strong riffs.
What’s your local music scene like?
Our local music scene is the best it’s been for as long as we can remember. Lots of upcoming bands and we’ve had a few really cool additions to the scene like Common People Festival and Independence Festival. The Joiners is one of the best small venues in the country, we’re lucky to have it.
What do you have planned for the next 12 months? Any albums or festivals?
We’re going to release a couple of new singles, possibly an EP. We’re playing Y Not Festival, Wickham Festival, Southsea and we played Common People, Isle of Wight and Y Not. We’ve got shows in Southampton, Portsmouth, Bournemouth and London coming up and we’ve got loads of shows left to announce for the rest of the year including another trip up north!
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
Kendrick Lamar is killing it at the moment and seems like he’d be great to collaborate with, not sure how the genre would work out though! We’re big fans of Father John Misty, Everything Everything and Gengahr who are all releasing great stuff at the moment.
Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
Couldn’t think of anything that wasn’t inappropriate here!
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about your band?
We’re playing a lot of shows so check out our tour dates!
