Every Monday we will be bringing you an unsigned singer or band as part of our Independent Music Monday feature. This week, we caught up with Coco Peri to find out more about her…
Where are you from?
How did you first get into music?
I’ve always had a passion for poetry and started making my poems into lyrics and recording melodies onto my mobile. I did music for GCSE but hated theory and only liked producing songs and I didn’t enjoy doing piano lessons but I regret it now.
We love your EP Triple S, what was the influence behind it?
I just wanted a slow jam type vibe with a urban twist and initially the songs were just going to be singles but the songs came together well and had the same style and theme.
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
My musical influences growing up to name a few were Ashanti, Aaliyah, Alicia Keys, John Legend, Lily Allen, Sade, Teedra Moses and now they are Jhene Aiko, Frank Ocean, Drake, Kali Uchis, Amy Winehouse, Lauryn Hill and Etta Bond.
How would you describe your sound?
Smooth, Sultry and Seductive just as Triple S stands for.
What’s your local music scene like?
Grime, Trap, Rap and RnB.
What do you have planned for the next 12 months? Any albums or festivals?
Releasing more music and hopefully more videos until I get recognised and secure a publishing deal.
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
I’d love to work with all of my influences and inspirations but Drake, Jhene Aiko and Kali Uchis in particular.
Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
Not really I’m afraid as I don’t perform but whilst I was recording Triple S in the studio I almost went into tears when the guy told me to ‘turn him on’ when I was trying to get into character in my sexy mode.
What is the one thing that you want our readers to know about you?
I’m just a normal girl out to pursue her dreams and make memories with creative people who share my passion and when I am in a position to, I want to make a difference and help people who aspire to be in the music industry.
