Every Monday we will be bringing you an unsigned singer or band as part of our Independent Music Monday feature. This week, we caught up with Chris Haze find out more about him…
Where are you from?
How did you first get into music?
I have always wanted to be involved in music. But in 2011 I lived in a house with some mates that were into and making music at the time. I started taking my friends guitar and started learning chords on YouTube. And from there started writing my own songs instead of learning covers and stuff. Another mate that lived in the house had a home studio and was recording for some artists. I came to him when I wrote my first guitar riff and lyrics and he loved it. That gave me the confidence to pursue music as a full time career.
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
When I was growing up Michael Jackson was huge in my house. I remember listening to the old vinyl player on top of the fridge playing a Michael Jackson album. I was a huge fan of Hip Hop growing up. I used to listen to Tupac, Eminem, 50 Cent.. The first album I ever bought was “Get Rich Or Die Trying” by 50 Cent. At the minute I’m influenced by everything I hear. I’m trying to keep an open mind when it comes to being influenced as I don’t want to pigeon hole my music. But I can’t hide the fact that Ben Howard is a big influence for me at the moment. Coldplay are another big influence at the minute. Damien Marley has been an influence for me over the last few years. There are too many to name…😀
How would you describe your sound?
Distinctive, Raw, Lyrical and Unique. I don’t just write love songs… lol
What’s your local music scene like?
Very traditional, not very suited to the type of music I make. All I do here is write and record.
What do you have planned for the next 12 months? Any albums or festivals?
Over the next 12 months I will definitely be releasing a lot of new music and videos. As well as trying to get myself on as many festival stages as possible. You guys will be hearing a lot more from me over the next 12 months.
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
I’d love to collaborate with lots of artists. My first ever released song was a collab with my mate and U.K rap artist Alexi Duce. I’d love to collaborate with Damien Marley, he’s one of my favourite artists. I would also love to write songs with the likes of Sia, Ed Sheeran… I would also love to collaborate with electronic producers like Calvin Harris or Rudimental to create a club banger to tap into a whole new fanbase.
Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
Ah live performances are great, I love playing gigs. It’s the best part of making music. Things usually go well. But just to name one time, I was booked for a charity gig and when I showed up to play my set not even the people that organised the event had turned up let alone a crowd. It was one of those moments that makes you re-think your career path… haha
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
My fans mean everything!!! x
