For The Girl

Every Monday we will be bringing you an unsigned singer or band as part of our Independent Music Monday feature. This week, we caught up with unsigned Mansfield band For The Girl find out more...

Who is in the band, how did you meet, where are you from and how did you come up with the band name?
The band consists of Sam Plenty, Isaac Hallas, James Wells, Josh King and Foxy. We are a five piece indie pop rock band from Mansfield. We all met through various different avenues. Josh and Sam have always been in bands together, during this time, we met Isaac and fell in love and he used to jump on stage at our acoustic shows to jam out. James came to see us and wrote some bass tabs to our songs and we were blown away. We then needed a drummer and Sam and Foxy used to have the same drum teacher. We then all started writing as many songs as possible together. We also all became bestest mates, ain't it lovely. For the name, we didn't want to die virgins so we decided to learn our instruments and it seemed to work. It's also a name of a Fratellis song and it just stuck.

Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
The band is strange in the fact that we don't have a lot in common musically. James loves his funk like Jamiroquai, Victor Wooten. Foxy loves his heavier stuff like Metallica, Isaac enjoys his 1975 and INXS. Josh likes his indie bands like The Academic and Circa Waves. Sam enjoys all of the above and Spice Girls.

How would you describe your sound?
We try and make music that we enjoy playing live and brings smiles to faces and get people dancing. The best way we describe it is Indie Pop Rock.

What’s your local music scene like?
We are the local music scene 😜

What do you have planned for the next 12 months? Any albums or festivals?
2016 has been non-stop for us. We've released our new EP, done 2 UK tours, played O2 Academy main stages and loads of gigs in between. 2017 is going to have more and more new music and more and more gigs.

Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
We all have different answers to this due to our musical tastes, here you go:
Isaac - The 1975
James - Mark Ronson
Foxy - Avenge Sevenfold
Josh - Circa Waves
Sam - Maroon 5/Spice Girls

Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
Lots and lots. We once played King Tuts in Glasgow and Josh had some bad food that did not agree with his stomach. During sound check he had to run to the toilet because he thought he had followed through. We also played the Think Tank in Newcastle and Sam manage to fall up the stage (not down) twice in one night.

What is the one thing that you want readers to know about your band?
That we are five lads just making music and we want you to hear it. Plus we have a huge Van. Please listen to our songs "Where Did Time Go?" and "Breathe".
