Every Monday we will be bringing you an unsigned singer or band as part of our Independent Music Monday feature. This week, we caught up with Horsham band Boxtape find out more about them...
Who is in the band, how did you meet, where are you from and how did you come up with the band name?
The two members of Boxtape are - Kat Ward and Kieren Johnstone and we met at school. We're both from West Sussex and have been playing in bands together for a number of years. We came up with the band name when we were sitting at a table in a garden saying random words to each other, when box then tape came out we stopped.
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
Dire Straits, Hell Is For Heroes, Muse, Kate Bush, Toyah when we were younger. Pretty much anything that is good are our influences now, lyrically Eminem is quite an inspiration.
How would you describe your sound?
Guitar duo playing indie pop with a weird edge.
What’s your local music scene like?
Terrible. Not to say there aren't some amazing musicians based in the town where we live, but there are no venues, so there is no scene or anything to bring bands here.
What do you have planned for the next 12 months? Any albums or festivals?
Our debut single "Fancy Objects" is coming out on Dec 8th, lots of gigs, festivals (hopefully, we've applied to loads), working more on our YouTube series, and writing lots of songs.
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
Amanda Palmer is quite high up on the list, we are very big fans of hers.
Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
One time we were headlining a stage at a festival and one song into our set the organiser comes over to stop us and says "sorry guys I got the timing wrong we're holding a raffle now" so takes the audience with him to have the raffle at a different stage. We restarted our set later after they had finished.
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about your band?
We really love cats and if you watch our videos on YouTube you have a good chance of seeing at least one.
