Every Monday we will be bringing you an unsigned singer or band as part of our Independent Music Monday feature. This week, we caught up with Laura White who we first saw in 2008 when she was a contestant on The X Factor and shockingly went out in the sing-off against Ruth Lorenzo. We are so pleased that she didn’t give up on singing and we are really looking forward to her new album in 2017!

Hi Laura, it’s been 8 years since you finished in 8th place on The X Factor in 2008. What have you been up to since then?
I’ve released two EP’s so far and my third is out this summer on the label iluvlive records. I’ve gigged across the UK over the last few years and have been fortunate that most of my gigs have sold out, thanks to my lovely and loyal fans… I write all of my own material, and have also written for many other artists including Alicia Keys and Rita Ora, the track NY Raining, which got me a Grammy nomination! It’s so amazing, I love being independent and have been working hard on my music, it’s just such a good feeling when the hard work starts paying off.

How did you first get into music?
I started classical piano when I was 8 years old and started to sing at 15, taking my music all over the UK and learning to write songs, I was also in the Mark Ronson band for a while, which was fun.

Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
Aretha, Billie Holiday, Burt Bacharach, Lauryn Hill and they are still my inspirations today!

How would you describe your sound?
My sound is real, authentic, soulful and the songs are all autobiographical.

What’s your local music scene like?
I have lived in London for 6 years making my music but I’m still a Manchester girl at heart. Manchester has some great writers and I believe my city made me the musician I am today.

What do you have planned for the next 12 months? Any albums or festivals?
I’m dropping my third EP at the end of the summer and my album will be released in 2017 with festivals, collabs and some exciting features with other artists too, I’m also busy writing for other artists.

Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
I have worked with a few established artists that I love, but my dream will always be to sing and write with Aretha!

Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
I sang ‘Falling’ once and fell off stage!! It was soooooo funny though!

What is the one thing that you want our readers to know about you?
I’ve been through a lot of experiences so far in my life but I am a fighter and believe in working hard at my craft every day, I love music and love the life I’m living and I’m grateful to be able to do what I love every day.
