Every Monday we will be bringing you an unsigned singer or band as part of our Independent Music Monday feature. This week, we caught up with Liverpool band Venus Demilo find out more about them...
Who is in the band, how did you meet, where are you from and how did you come up with the band name?
We're Tom, Chrissy, Fran, Josh and Ryan and we all met during university (apart from Tom and Josh who are cousins!) studying music. The name comes from Tom's friend Jon who recommended it; we did have a massive list that we came up with but most of them were a bit naff.
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
Tom: I went through the Fall Out Boy/Taking Back Sunday/My Chemical Romance stage when I was a teenager (I'm still going through it now). These days it's a lot of things, at the minute my two favourites are The Internet and Clean Cut Kid.
Chrissy: I was a devout Metalhead when I was growing up! I'm pretty much into everything but Gabber now...
Ryan: I used to listen to a lot of classic metal when I was younger. Nowadays it's a mix of punk and synthwave so it's toned down an awful lot.
How would you describe your sound?
Tom: Think Two Door Cinema Club had a baby with (newer) Foals.
What’s your local music scene like?
Chrissy: It's pretty lively, you'll always catch someone playing somewhere every day of the week.
Fran: Plus everyone is extremely supportive of each other so it's a pretty friendly scene to be a part of.
What do you have planned for the next 12 months? Any albums or festivals?
Tom: We're looking to release a new single towards the start of the year although we haven't confirmed a date as of yet.
Ryan: Plus a lot more shows in Manchester and down south, if you'll have us.
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
Chrissy: Hmm right now working with someone like St. Vincent would be cool. But my dream collaborator would've been David Bowie.
Josh: There's a lot of people I'd like to collaborate with, Kurt Cobain would have been cool but he died before I was born so that would have been tricky. From the list of alive people, my cousin Tom is a great start, he's such a great guy. He didn't type this answer out for me FYI
Ryan: I think working with someone like Radiohead would be insane.
Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
Ryan: Not so funny at the time, but there was one occasion where our tracking broke and played my metronome out to the audience.
Chrissy: He forgot to mention that it was also broadcast across the UK for anyone to stream...
Tom: That was probably the longest half a minute of my life. There was also the time that we got raided by the police and not only the show but the venue got shut down for good. Not a funny story but definitely one of the more memorable gigs.
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about your band?
Tom: I don't know if there's anything in particular we want people to know, we just hope that people enjoy the tunes and can relate them to their own lives even if it's not in the way that we intended when we were writing them.
