Every Monday we will be bringing you an unsigned singer or band as part of our Independent Music Monday feature. This week, we caught up with KAZE find out more about them…
Who is in the band, how did you meet, where are you from and how did you come up with the band name?
Manchester based KAZE was formed by Amy Webber and Graham McCusker - shortly after Graham, originally from Paisley, was diagnosed with Leukaemia. It was while going through chemo that Graham decided to start the band and him and Amy started writing lyrics and music as soon as he was well enough to sit at a piano. After 5 months of treatment, and 20 songs later, they were ready to get their music out in to the big wide world and get noticed, and Graham was back to his usual excitable self. The name KAZE, means ‘wind’ in Japanese - we’ll let you decide why…
We met while studying at the Royal Northern College of Music. We both studied opera singing but have been singing/playing pop for even longer than classical. Once we had the songs and planned to record and EP, we joined forces with other mates form RNCM to form the full band. Full line up is Amy on vocals, Graham vocals/keys, Tom Fripp on guitar, Dan Peate on bass and Jonathan Needham on drums.
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
We both have too many to name. Anything from whale music to hiphop and rock music to bird song.
How would you describe your sound?
Alternative Pop - Sing along, head banging, toe tapping.
What is your latest single called and what was the influence behind it?
'Pinned On You' is about unrequited love and feeling f***ing pissed off. It's being released on 29 September alongside an equally fierce music video. We're chuffed that it's been played on BBC 6 Music, Amazing Radio and other local radio stations.
What’s your local music scene like?
Manchester is an amazing city to live in as a musician. There are countless venues, music lovers to fill them, high class music schools churning out great musicians, great bands on tour promoters and cheap beer which also helps fuel the music scene.
What do you have planned for the next 12 months? Any albums or festivals?
Releasing our first single officially on 29th September with a PR Campaign. Record our second EP. Apply to festivals for 2018. And continue to get noticed!!
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
Postman Pat? Seriously though, Amy has always been a fan of the cross rhythms and rhymes in rap so she'd love a song to have a middle 8 rap section maybe with one of her faves Loyle Carner.
Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
Whatever we do, there's normally a funny or stupid story behind it. We don't have many filters on language, body functions and have the sense of humour of a 6 year old.
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about your band/duo?
Get our signatures now so you can sell them on ebay in a few years when we're famous.
