Every Monday we will be bringing you an unsigned singer or band as part of our Independent Music Monday feature. This week, we caught up with Guru find out more about them…
Who is in the band, how did you meet and where are you from?
We are Guru and we consist of;
Tom Cherrill - Vox, rhythm
Kieran Hunter - Lead
Ferg Bordoli - Bass
Simon Daniels - Professional drum hitting
Tom and Kieran met over five years ago at a party, sharing a sofa to sleep on the same night, because the love is real (to an extent). Although remaining mates, it took four years and a move to Brighton to get anything musical going. Ferg can continually be found at gigs - this is where we found Ferg. Si was found at The Breakfast Club whilst Tom and Kieran were on a hungover search for a bacon butty.
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
In terms of influence, we all differ slightly. Sabbath runs deep. Brian Jones Town Massacre, Bob Dylan, Sex Pistols, Queens of the Stone Age, Demob Happy, Jimi Hendrix. We could go on - there's a mix. Growing up, Ferg loved a bit of Foo Fighters and Tom has thankfully just left a four year long obsession with Oasis, which some feared would never end.
How would you describe your sound?
We struggle to define our sound. Fuzzy, maybe. Heavy, maybe. Good, probably. A Spanish magazine Binaural called us 'Jungle Punk', so make of that what you will.
What is your latest single called and what was the influence behind it?
Our latest single, River, isn't about much really but it does have a nice groove to it, a tambourine on it and even a shouty bit. We recorded it cos it sounds f a t live.
What’s your local music scene like?
Our local music scene is very alive. Being in Brighton there's always gigs going on and we've had the pleasure of playing with some really, really good bands. Shout outs to Gang, Inevitable Daydream and Zilinski.
What do you have planned for the next 12 months? Any albums or festivals?
As for the next 12 months, we'll see. We'd love to hit some festivals, but we know for sure we're gonna carry on gigging and putting more singles out.
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
There isn't anyone we'd really like to collaborate with if we're honest. Tom wants all the glory for himself, bloody frontman.
Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
Whilst gigging, Ferg spends most his time on the floor, Kieran's shirts are seeming to be less and less buttoned up, Si is spending less and less time sitting on his drum stool and Tom has been caught looking at himself in the mirror during a gig a couple of times. Bloody frontman.
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about your band?
In answer to your last question, we want to remain aloof and mysterious. If people want to know something, they can come to one of our gigs and talk to us there.
