Every Monday we will be bringing you an unsigned singer or band as part of our Independent Music Monday feature. This week, we caught up with Vas Leon find out more about him…

Where are you from and how did you first get into music?
I’m from Jupiter, so I’m a Jupiterian! Haha, I’m from London! I first started getting into music… I don’t know. I mean I did learn how to play instruments at a very young age so you could say then, but in terms of writing, I got into it through poetry and writing poetry during studying at high school. That’s where I also picked up producing and I only did all that for fun! That’s where it all started, and I started to take it more seriously in around 2010 / 2011.

Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
To be honest most of them are the same really. Old is Gold you know?! Haha. Grew up listening to the likes of MJ, Stevie Wonder, Nas, Tupac, B.I.G., Mase, Mobb Deep, Usher, Common. It goes wide though because at one point especially I was influenced by Coldplay, Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Hoobastank! New influences would probably be the likes of Ed Sheeran, Adele and… that’s probably it to be honest, as far as influences!

How would you describe your sound?
Real, haha. Just real sound. I’d describe it as life, because I don’t fabricate anything, I say it how I feel it. If I feel it, I will write it. I don’t make songs for the sake of it, whether it’s for fun or to make people aware of situations. I decided not to put my sound in a box so my sound is ME, but it’s also YOU! Something for everybody without the over use of anything, something positive. Life!

What is your latest single called and what was the influence behind it?
Well I have a few new videos, but not necessarily single releases as they come from my upcoming release ‘Stages’. Which are Hypedragon, Nah Nah, and No MakeUp. The influence with Hypedragon is really my fashion sense, what I’ve been doing and wearing for around 10 years that people are now starting to wear of now. Nah Nah is more of an anthem for everybody to get up and vibe to! It’s a track for a team! It's a track for everyone to unify to! No Makeup, is… I’ll let you decide for yourself haha.

What’s your local music scene like?
Crazy! So much going on to be honest it’s hard to hear it all, and a lot, well, all of it is different from my stuff but it’s really dope! People going to different places off something they enjoy doing, I love seeing that stuff happening!

What do you have planned for the next 12 months? Any albums or festivals?
Festivals fingers crossed and keep a look out for sure! Albums, yeah I have a lot of music in the works, I can’t say too much but I have a lot planned and I’m currently living in the studio getting things right! Haha.

Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
Damian Marley would be so dope! Definitely Nas, Common, Ed! Ed Sheeran would be a dope collaboration I think. And Adele! There’s quite a few as you can tell, Chronixx, Alkaline, Kendrick, Logic, Eminem, Joey Bada$$, Gym Class Heroes, Coldplay, Hoobastank, Bruno Mars, The Weeknd, Travis Scott… DMX and EVE! Haha. That’s all I can think of right now, I know it’s a lot but they all have musical qualities that would be good for an amazing album, even if some of them were just harmonies!

Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
Funny, nope haha. I tend to bring a little humour into them but no funny stories, thank goodness for that! Haha.

What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
I’m one to put their trust in really, when it comes to music. Everyone likes something that is similar, but I’m not similar, I just like to speak my mind and do what I feel is right with my creativity and just… listen to my music! Haha. I also want the readers to always have a positive mind, each and every day, it will change your life. I try and tweet something positive every day so check that as well as my social networks, but yeah. Listen to my music, stay positive and be yourself as I am. By being yourself, you put something wonderful in the world that was not there before.
