Every Monday we will be bringing you an unsigned singer or band as part of our Independent Music Monday feature. This week, we caught up with Sean Simmons find out more about him…
Where are you from and how did you first get into music?
Hey, I'm from South East London. I originally got into music by singing karaoke songs of Robbie Williams at a young age I guess. But it really took shape around the age of 15 when my Grandad taught me a few chords on the guitar and then I taught myself everything from there onwards.
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
My musical influences was varied, I loved pop rock like McFly and Busted and they're still in my influences today, along with Paul Weller from The Jam and David Bowie. Now my influences include a friend Bipolar Sunshine, he's doing some mad stuff! And also people like John Mayer, Ed Sheeran, Bastille and The 1975.
How would you describe your sound?
Awful. Just don't listen to it. 😂... erm I would say it's alternative pop, I try and make every song different. So some songs will be more poppy, some more rock. But I try and write a story in most of my songs. So if you listen to Get Drunk it tells a story about a man on the dole with only an escapism of alcohol. Superhero is about wanting to win over the girl like they do in the movies.
What is your latest single called and what was the influence behind it?
Loveable is my latest single. It's a weird one as I wrote the chorus when I was 16 but never visited it again until recently where I then sang the verses over the top of a loop. I recorded it and wrote it completely different compared to all my previous songs but thankfully it paid off and went to number 42 in the iTunes Singer/Songwriter chart. I grafted like mad on this one, playing every instrument and producing it. The real reason why I released it so quickly was that I just split up with a long term girlfriend and I needed something to take my mind of it lol. So thanks to everyone who bought it!
What’s your local music scene like?
It's varied really. For my type of music (playing acoustic most of the time) it can be kind of slow. For other bands it can be great but not a lot of locals go out to support new music which is a shame. But there's some great guys who put in a lot of work to try and make it, so thank you to everyone who works hard making it happen. Massive shout out to Jak Coleman and Adam Fillary, you guys help me out so much.
What do you have planned for the next 12 months? Any albums or festivals?
In September I'll be releasing a limited amount of CD's of a mini album for the charity MIND. It will feature 5 singles and 2 demos. They will be available from my website soon. But after that I plan to do an Acoustic EP and one more single before the end of the year is out.
I'm looking to play as many shows as possible on top no matter where it is, I'm there. May have a mini tour announcement coming soon too.
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
I'd love to write with Tom Fletcher (McFly) and James Bourne (Busted) as I believe their writing pattern is similar to mine.
Song wise, I wanna do a big dance track. A remix of Get Drunk and maybe a few other things. I'm currently working on a track featuring Bipolar Sunshine the singer of DJ Snakes' hit Middle. He's allowed me to rework his latest single "Are You Happy" and add my spin to it.
Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
I was once playing an intimate acoustic gig, and whilst singing one of my singles I burped down the mic so loudly and then just cracked up. Thankfully I kept the guitar playing going but it was something new to the song.
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
I'm single... I'm skint... I'm fat.
Just all I want to say is, check out my music and other new artists around. I enjoy my music and that's the main thing and the support I get can be amazing but sometimes it can be hard. If you like my stuff, hit me up and I'll happily chat.
