Every Monday we will be bringing you an unsigned singer or band as part of our Independent Music Monday feature. This week, we caught up with Smashby find out more about him…
Where are you from and how did you first get into music?
I was born and grew up in West Yorkshire, I started getting into music when I was 13 years old. I had been bullied all my life for being different and music became my escape, I started writing upbeat crazy pop songs to take me away from the harsh reality of school, bullies and the online hate I was getting. I channeled everything about myself that I was criticised for and embraced my weirdness.
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
I have quite the mixture of influences, growing up I was very pop inspired by artists such as Adam Lambert, Lady Gaga and Britney Spears, as I got older I started taking more influences from the legends such as Michael Jackson, Prince, Freddie Mercury and David Bowie.
How would you describe your sound?
I’d say my sound is like Justin Bieber meets RuPaul, it’s catchy, crazy, pretty commercial and camp as Christmas. I like to dabble with lots of sub-genres though, I even have a country song on my upcoming album.
What is your latest single called and what was the influence behind it?
My new single is called Birthday Suit, I just released it even though it was recorded over a year ago. I’ve had a lot of struggles in the industry which set me back a bit but everything happens for a reason and I’m so glad it’s finally out. Birthday Suit is probably the most uplifting song I’ve put out, it’s just a fun song about living in the moment and having a good time.
What’s your local music scene like?
There’s a lot of indie rock bands where I’m from and a tonne of acoustic artists, they’re all wonderful and super talented but I love being one of the few local pop artists.
What do you have planned for the next 12 months? Any albums or festivals?
To finally release my new EP, I’m very excited about it! I’ve written over 100 songs, I write a lot but I’ve chosen the ones I relate to the most at this time in my life and the ones I think my fans will too. I’m mainly known for performing at Pride festivals so I’m planning on an even BIGGER Pride tour next year with some surprise events too.
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
So many people! Kesha being the main one, she is so inspiring to me. I’d love to work with RuPaul also.
Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
There’s always something funny that happens or something that goes wrong that I laugh about later. I’m pretty clumsy and I nearly always knock my water bottle over so by the end of the show I’m just trying to dodge the water as I’m dancing.
One time I also was taking off my jacket on stage but the next song had already started and I got tangled up in my jacket and missed like half of the first verse.
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
I want everyone to know that I am doing this for the misfits, I have always been an outsider “the weird kid in school” that few people believed in, and that if I can do this and keep chasing my dreams you can too! I want to be the role model that I longed for growing up.
