Every Monday we will be bringing you an unsigned singer or band as part of our Independent Music Monday feature. This week, we caught up with duo SIIGHTS find out more about them…
Who is in the duo, how did you meet, where are you from and how did you come up with the duo name?
SIIGHTS are Mia Fitz from Dublin and Toni Etherson from Glasgow. We met in L.A, when Mia was on tour with Hozier and I was songwriting out there. Mia had a few days off from tour and was writing with people out there, we were introduced and started writing together, initially for other people. We got such an amazing reaction to the tracks that we decided to form SIIGHTS.
We came up with the name SIIGHTS because we wanted to find something that represented us and the message we want to share through our music which is positivity, forward thinking, vision and aspiration etc. We added the extra 'I' as there is 2 of us, and thought it was looked cool!
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
Toni - When I was younger my big sister would listen to a lot of pop and RnB / soul music, I fell in love with the Brandy - 'Never Say Never' record, it's one of my favourite albums to date. I think that's when I first found my voice really. Then I got into songwriting / playing guitar and obsessed over Oasis and The Stone Roses, there's a huge Indie music scene in Glasgow so it was the natural progression. My influences are so vast, I am probably most influenced by life and what I see going on around me, my own experiences of other peoples. Musically though, I'm constantly inspired by the amazing production coming through popular culture atm, the bar is set so high and I've a lot of love and respect for the leaders in that race. Drake and London Grammar are two artists I listen to a lot right now.
Mia - I was definitely influenced by a lot of Funk and Soul music like Stevie Wonder, The Meters, I also loved a lot of Folk music. I was constantly picking up new instruments growing up and wanting to learn them, I would try to listen and play as much music in different styles as possible. I think my playing and songwriting is influenced by a lot of styles. We write and produce everything ourselves and play all the instruments on our tracks so I think those influences definitely come out throughout SIIGHTS music.
How would you describe your sound?
We fuse organic instruments with programmed production elements, with lyrics that are real to us, it's previously been described as somewhere between Sia and Major Lazer, so we'll take that!
What is your latest single called and what was the influence behind it?
Our new single is called 'ALIVE', it's about overcoming struggle and standing up against negativity from people and situations in life. It's about embracing your inner strength, being grateful that you're alive and rejecting that negativity.
What’s your local music scene like?
Mia - The music scene is amazing, everyone is very supportive of each other and there are some great bands / artists emerging right now.
Toni - I'd say Glasgow is much the same, so much talent, and so much support from music fans, bands and venues / promoters alike. It's amazing.
What do you have planned for the next 12 months? Any albums or festivals?
We have a busy year ahead with some really exciting plans, we are going to release new music and announce tour dates.
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
Toni - I'd love for SIIGHTS to collaborate with Chance The Rapper, I think he's amazing. Or Drake.
Mia - There's so many people it would be great to collab with, I'd love to do something with Stevie Wonder or Diplo.
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about your duo?
Mia - We write and produce all of our music ourselves, we are working on an exciting live show and can't wait to come to city near you and play.
