Every Monday we will be bringing you an unsigned singer or band as part of our Independent Music Monday feature. This week, we caught up with Alice Short find out more about her...
Where are you from and how did you first get into music?
I’m from Nottingham. I got into making music through hearing Eminem, I think the first song I heard of his was ‘The Real Slim Shady’ when I was about 11. I was obsessed with The Marshall Mathers LP. But even before that I loved music. I played the drums, wrote songs with my sister.
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
Growing up I listened to a lot of pop music, I think everyone does. Then I really got into punk. Now I would say my influences are Kate Tempest, Patti Smith, Nirvana, Joy Division. I listen to the lyrics more than anything.
How would you describe your sound?
I’ve described it before as being Hip Hop made by an introvert that hangs out with a lot of singer song writers. I think the sound of it is Hip Hop with a twist, I just tend to go with what I feel while making the music.
What is your latest single called and what was the influence behind it?
My latest single is called ‘Collect Your Thoughts’. The influence behind it was moments of not being able to talk to people about things. Kind of holding back and having to get your own thoughts together before you talk to someone else about it.
What’s your local music scene like?
The music scene in Nottingham is diverse, there’s a lot of amazing musicians that I’m lucky enough to call my friends. There’s a lot of incredible Hip Hop/ Grime artists.
What do you have planned for the next 12 months? Any albums or festivals?
In the next 12 months I’ve got some new singles coming out, I just wanted to put songs out with videos and make each song more of an event. I also want to work on a couple of EP’s to bring out next year.
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
I’d love to collaborate with Kate Tempest, she’s insanely talented. The dream collaboration would be Patti Smith, that would be out of this world. If anyone that knows her sees this, please let her know.
Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
I’ve had someone shout at me mid poem at a Poetry slam and the weirdest part was it was during a poem about Doctor Who. I wasn’t sure how someone could be that angry at a poem about a family TV show.
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
I’m the best thing they haven’t heard yet. Oh yeah, and 'Collect Your Thoughts' is out now on iTunes, Spotify and all good digital music buying/streaming services.
