Just Like Fruit
Every Monday we will be bringing you an unsigned singer or band as part of our Independent Music Monday feature. This week, we caught up with Dion from Just Like Fruit find out more about them…
Who is in the band, how did you meet, where are you from and how did you come up with the band name?
Myself (Dion) on vocals, we have the lovely Kieran who does the majority of the songwriting as well as chugging away on rhythm guitar, Ryan on bass duties, Taran is our lead virtuoso and behind the beat we have Erwin keeping us together.
Well we've known each other and played together for years, Kieran started as my next door neighbour in London and eventually we all lived together in Brighton where we formed.
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
Well I would say a variety of classic, alternative, and blues rock is where it starts I guess, we're talking a bit of - Pavement, The Stones, Big Star, and you gotta love a bit of ABBA.
Influences these days are far and wide but this time of year we're really feeling Courtney Barnett, The Replacements, Paul Simon and faithfully, eternally... the sounds of ABBA.
How would you describe your sound?
Hmm, well someone once told us it was Surf Rock, we've also heard we're a stoned Maroon 5 aha. I guess we would describe our sound as perching somewhere in between Pavement and Tom Petty if that makes any sense.
What is your latest single called and what was the influence behind it?
We've just released a mini-film music video for our song 'Mama Said' off the EP which was kinda influenced by a combination of the old Wild West movies of the 1960's with the vibe of Wes Anderson's films. You can check it out on our socials and let us know what you think!
What’s your local music scene like?
Brighton is always popping with gigs and open mics, even the buskers are great! London is okay, but we just discovered this quirky venue in Brixton 'The Windmill' which is really cool if you're up for going a bit mental... Such a vibe.
What do you have planned for the next 12 months? Any albums or festivals?
We're organising a tour of the U.K at the moment, and we sure aim to be hitting Europe again soon.
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
Loads but they're all dying. We were supposed to do a collab with our guy Octavian who's blowing up right now but it kinda fell to pieces (hopefully its still on the cards) Check him out.
P.S if you're reading this Tay, we're sorry...
Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
Tis hard to pick just one, but I'd have to say when we were travelling through Europe, on a self organised/unorganised tour, we were stranded in Milan on route to a few gigs in Poland with no money for the coach.
When we ended up busking to hundreds of people for most of the night, with eyes staring in awe... We made just enough money for the coach but not enough for a bed. They didn't know we ended up sleeping over a drain huddled together, next to a polluted river to wake up with some severely cold toes. We did make the coach!
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about your band?
Just keep your eyes peeled as there's lots of exciting stuff about to happen.
