Every Monday we will be bringing you an unsigned singer or band as part of our Independent Music Monday feature. This week, we caught up with IMAN find out more about her...
Where are you from and how did you first get into music?
I'm London born and raised, the area I grew up in was very suburban and didn't have much in terms of creative outlets certainly at my school or youth clubs. I knew I always wanted to be a singer and was very much drawn to performing and every chance I got to do so I grabbed. At 16 I ended up running away from home and I subsequently lived in an area that was the total opposite to all I knew, it was in Islington and I found it creative and vibrant. Living there was the beginning of my musical journey.
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
I had a lot of Yusuf Islam playing when I was growing up and my mum would sometimes play her old middle eastern favourites. Mostly though I'd spend hours listening to the radio with pop songs on repeat and I think perhaps by osmosis that's why I tend to write pop melodies.
How would you describe your sound?
Electronic, pop, soul.
What is your latest single called and what was the influence behind it?
My latest release is called FOR YOU and I wrote it about when I ran away from home. After the good part of a year I returned home a different person and my perspective had changed so I wrote it as me talking to my younger self. The record is available to stream and download on all major platforms here - https://fanlink.to/iman_foryou
What’s your local music scene like?
I live in West London and there's loads of venues here that has live music going so that's really cool.
What do you have planned for the next 12 months? Any albums or festivals?
I am in the studio mainly writing and recording new material. I hope to be on a few line ups this year and will have news of this on my website www.imanmusic.co.uk. I've also just started DJing which is loads of fun!
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
Drake! One of the best songwriters out there he's great with melody.
Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
Fortunately my performances have always gone smoothly! But I have been known to sometimes forget my lyrics and somehow I always automatically go into improvisation mode and start free styling.
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
I guess that my music is honest, raw and real and that's the only type of art I want to create.
