Every Monday we will be bringing you an unsigned singer or band as part of our Independent Music Monday feature. This week, we caught up with Milena find out more about her…
Where are you from and how did you first get into music?
I was born and raised in Montenegro. My musical journey started when I was 7 years old winning first prize as the best solo singer at the Children’s Music Festival.
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
There have been so many influences throughout my life and career, but as a child I would say it was my father and his love of music who inspired me. He introduced me to jazz which led me onto finding funk, soul and dance. I always love listening to Earth, Wind and Fire; The Rebirth; some 90’s Acid Jazz bands... etc
How would you describe your sound?
My sound is a mix of funky pop with a dance, jazzy, and classical fusion.
What is your latest single called and what was your influence behind it?
My latest single is called “I Know”. It’s an acoustic version of the same dance track on the album. The video was made in beautiful Stone Newington warehouse where I am playing concert piano. It is one of the oldest songs I've made but the message is current - trying to stay positive and productive Everyday ;)
What’s your local music scene like?
I live in London so I am spoilt for choice when it comes to music. I enjoy going to the Jazz Café, Ronnie Scott’s, and bars and clubs in Shoreditch and Dalston where I usually perform too.
What do you have planned for the next 12 months? Any albums or festivals?
My latest album “Everyday” has been out since September 2017 and I have just released “Everyday Remixes” available on all major music platforms. I have done some live gigs, interviews and radio plays to promote this album and another video has been scheduled for the middle of January 2018. The next live show is scheduled for the 2nd of May at Hoxton's famous Zigfrid Von Underbelly. I am already working on my next venture and planning to release a few more new singles. I will be collaborating with some other artists but I won’t reveal too much for now.
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
I would love to record with my good friend Ivy Chanel who has an amazing talent for writing her own music. Also I’ve always wanted to make a song with Mariah Carey but unfortunately she is always busy.
Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
Where do I start... :)
What is one thing that you want readers to know about you?
I am fluent in Japanese.
