Every Monday we will be bringing you an unsigned singer or band as part of our Independent Music Monday feature. This week, we caught up with Dan from October Drift find out more about them...
Who is in the band, how did you meet, where are you from and how did you come up with the band name?
So we have Kiran (vocals/guitar), Dan (guitar), Alex (Bass) and Chris (drums and backing Vox). We’re from the southwest of England and we all met at school. We started playing together like 10 years ago and just kept on going until we became less crap! My story of how the band name came about is that I wanted to call the band ‘October’, and some of the others wanted to call it ‘drift’ but neither were particularly easy to find when you googled it so we decided to combine the two and there’s nothing else similar so it comes up straight away! So yeah, our name is completely based on how ‘googleable’ it is.
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
I was really into classic rock when I was a kid, stuff like Iron Maiden and AC/DC and Led Zeppelin. I wanted to play like Slash from Guns n Roses or Jimi Hendrix... the trouble is those guys aren’t human! So overtime the way I played guitar changed (detuning and playing chords is easy) and so did my music taste. We started hanging out at the local record store a lot and Phil the owner pretty much put me onto every band I listen to now!
How would you describe your sound?
Loud and proud!
What is your latest single called and what was the influence behind it?
It’s called “All Broken Down” and it’s written about being stuck at a train station all night and just sitting there waiting.
What’s your local music scene like?
As far as I’m aware it’s pretty bad. I mean we’re from a small town, so there isn’t really much point in touring bands coming through and there’s no real music venues here at the moment. When we were growing up there was an awesome thing for youth music called ‘live n up’ and they used to put on shows where all the young bands would play. I’m sure there’s something like that now, but we’re not really here much anymore! Me and Kiran used to work in an awesome venue called ‘Perfect 5th’ when we were 18 but it unfortunately had to close down during the recession!
What do you have planned for the next 12 months? Any albums or festivals?
Yeah we’ve got some festivals lined up, more touring and probably another release maybe. The album is recorded ready to go but we’ve just gotta find the right people to release it.
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
Yeah, Justin Vernon, Frank Ocean or Courtney Barnett. Random mix there I know!
Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
Our live performance is pretty intense and we really go for it on stage, and we have played show upon show upon show where there’s like 5 people in the audience. But this one time we played in Weston Super Mare at a youth cafe to literally two twelve year old kids and a lady with her baby and still gave it everything. I even ended up smashing up a tambourine as part of the show... it was all very ‘spinal tap’.
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about your band?
Kiran is obsessed with these things called ‘dolmades’ it’s like rice wrapped in leaves. So if anyone reading this ever wants to bring any snacks to shows on tour to keep us going he’ll love you forever!
