Megan O'Neill

Every Monday we will be bringing you an unsigned singer or band as part of our Independent Music Monday feature. This week, we caught up with Megan O'Neill find out more about her

Where are you from and how did you first get into music?
I'm from Ireland, Co. Kildare. Music is a huge part of Irish culture so I grew up surrounded by music all the time. My mother is an incredible musician/singer so she pushed me into learning piano aged 6. From there it spiralled.

Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
My mother being a huge music lover combined with growing up in Ireland were both huge influencers growing up. Plus my Mam had good taste - so she introduced me to all sorts of great artists, bands, musicians, etc.
My main modern influences now would be Ryan Adams, Brandi Carlile, First Aid Kit, Joseph and many more! But I still listen to a lot of old school stuff that has been with me since my childhood; Fleetwood Mac, Mary Black, Reba McEntire, Bruce Springsteen, etc.

How would you describe your sound?
It's definitely a fusion. Americana - Country - Singer/Songwriter - Celtic!

What is your latest single called and what was the influence behind it?
My latest single was released 6th April 2018 and is titled 'Without'. It's the 3rd single from my forthcoming album 'Ghost of You' which will be released 8th June 2018. 'Without' is a super fun, country-esque, break-up song. Power to the woman in this one!

What’s your local music scene like?
The music scene in London is INSANELY GREAT! So much wonderful live music, everywhere, every night! I'm so lucky to live here.

What do you have planned for the next 12 months? Any albums or festivals?
My album is due out on 8th June 2018 so I'm very excited for that. There will also be a lot of touring and festivals. I'll be touring in the UK, US, Germany, Switzerland, Ireland and more!

Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
Ryan Adams or Brandi Carlile! (Preferably both!).

Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
There are always funny stories surrounding live gigs - mainly because you can never plan everything down to a T so things can go wrong. I've certainly played plenty of gigs over the years in a grimey pub in London where I've had to get changed in a bathroom cubicle prior to the gig. Very glam!

What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
My first full-length album titled 'Ghost of You' is coming out on June 8th and you should buy it! It's my first album and I am very proud. Produced by the amazing Zak Lloyd.

ALSO - we are having a big party on 26th April at 229 Great Portland St. to celebrate the album. If you come along you actually get to walk away with a signed copy of the album six weeks before official release AND you get free gin. I think that's a win win!
