Every Monday we will be bringing you an unsigned singer or band as part of our Independent Music Monday feature. This week, we caught up with Elliot from ZELAH find out more about them…
Who is in the band, how did you meet, where are you from and how did you come up with the band name?
James, Elliot and Zelah. We all met in the last year of uni before moving to London together. The band is named after vocalist Zelah.
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
To be honest they have varied and developed quite a lot growing up, but as we have written more our influences have definitely become more similar. Now our influences are mainly indie / alt pop so bands and artists like Oh Wonder, Fickle Friends, London Grammar, Banks, alt-J and The 1975.
How would you describe your sound?
What is your latest single called and what was the influence behind it?
Our latest song is Wide Awake. Zelah had recently moved to London and often felt like she was in a spiral of non-stop work, sometimes surrounded by people who don't completely understand what we're trying to do as musicians. So Wide Awake is really about holding onto those goals of getting somewhere with the music and never letting anyone make you question your beliefs about yourself, and just believing that the hard work will pay off in the end!
What’s your local music scene like?
We live in London so it’s pretty amazing, we love going to see up and coming bands as well as the established acts.
What do you have planned for the next 12 months? Any albums or festivals?
We have a lot to come, more music, more shows. The next thing we’re doing are some shows at the start of May, we’re playing the Old Blue Last on the 2nd and Moles in Bath on the 4th. We also have more releases planned which will be announced very soon.
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
We would love to hear our tracks remixed - we think it could really work for some of them (hey Calvin Harris)!
Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
Luckily for us our previous shows have all gone according to plan, but who knows, maybe in the May shows haha!
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about your band?
We are definitely all a little bit mental (in a good way), give our music a listen and come see us play! Always up for a drink after a show.
