Every Monday we will be bringing you an unsigned singer or band as part of our Independent Music Monday feature. This week, we caught up with Sam from unsigned band Mellor find out more about them...
Who is in the band, how did you meet, where are you from and how did you come up with the band name?
Gary Kingham on vocals and guitar, Josh Woodward on bass, Kristian Bell on guitar, and Sam Igoe on drums. Gary, Josh, and Kris knew each other from college and Sam was poached from another band on the Reading circuit! Gary is a massive fan of The Clash, the Mellor name comes from Joe Strummer's actual surname, not that interesting to be honest!
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
We've all got a lot of different musical influences which definitely helps when it comes to writing songs, we've all got different inputs based on what we grew up listening to and are listening to now. Artist wise, its pretty varied... Buddy Rich to the Rolling Stones, Stone Roses, Arctic Monkeys, Clash, Kasabian, Oasis, Blur, Foals, the list could go on forever.
How would you describe your sound?
We try and stay away from the term 'Indie' but for the sake of simplicity, it is Indie Rock in a nutshell I guess. We try and build our songs around specific musical hooks, loud guitars, and driving drums.
What is your latest single called and what was the influence behind it?
It's called 'Tri-State Blues'. Gary actually wrote it after watching a Louis Theroux documentary on substance abuse in America - there were three neighboring states that had a growing problem labelled the 'Tri States'. We try to stay away from the classic love songs written about an ex kind of vibe and write in a more observational manor.
What’s your local music scene like?
Reading is ok, everywhere could always be better. There's a few decent venues in the likes of Sub89, Purple Turtle, Oakford Social Club that do regular events for local and touring bands. It's always difficult when your hometown is so close to London, it's like everybody wants to desert playing decent shows in Reading and head to a more renowned venue in London, I guess the harmony between bands could be a bit better. Saying that, we've made some good mates in bands from the Reading scene, Adam and Elvis, Minor Mountains, Shoals - all bands who deserve more attention than they're currently getting.
What do you have planned for the next 12 months? Any albums or festivals?
No album unfortunately, we've got a few more singles lined up and then maybe we can start talking about an album. We've got some festivals lined up in the summer that we can't announce just yet and will be heading back out on the road in the autumn.
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
Josh Homme. Can you imagine the stories he's got?! Couple that with the songs he's written, it's a winning combo.
Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
Nothing funny springs to mind to be completely honest. We're normally too busy throwing ourselves round on stage to notice what's going on around us!
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about your band?
We make great music and they should definitely listen to it.
