Dan Olsen

Every Monday we will be bringing you an unsigned singer or band as part of our Independent Music Monday feature. This week, we caught up with Dan Olsen find out more about him...

Where are you from and how did you first get into music?
I'm from the Faroe Islands and reluctantly picked up the classical guitar when my mum pushed me into it telling me I should feel privileged for getting the chance after having been on the waiting list for many years. She was right. Mums usually are. My focus at the time was more on sports.

Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
First I would say The Beatles and some Faroese folk artists. All introduced to me by my dad. Then I discovered Jack Johnson, and his laid-back style inspired me to start add singing to my guitar playing.

How would you describe your sound?
These days it can go in many different directions but I would still say it can all go under the singer-songwriter genre.

What is your latest single called and what was the influence behind it?
'It Was Only Yesterday' was inspired by me digging back to a memory and just explaining the feelings that come to you the day after a loved one decides to leave you.

What’s your local music scene like?
London? It's amazing and full of life. There's so much going on. There's absolutely no excuse to not be active in this city.

What do you have planned for the next 12 months? Any albums or festivals?
Release more singles, music videos etc. tour in China (in August) for the fourth time, do a U.K. tour (in September) and some other exciting projects.

Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
Many. But it's not something I think a lot about. The creative juices are flowing bountifully at the moment. But if a big opportunity comes along, I'll of course jump right at it.

Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
A couple of times when the fans remembered and sang along to all the lyrics in a show and you slip on couple of them. Good to have them there to save you.

What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
That more music is coming out. So you should be following me in order to get updated on those releases ;)
