Every Monday we will be bringing you an unsigned singer or band as part of our Independent Music Monday feature. This week, we caught up with Cecil find out more about her…

Where are you from and how did you first get into music?
I’m from Thatcham in Berkshire. I first got into music at a young age when my mum formed a band and they spent their weekends jamming and rehearsing in our garage I sometimes use to steal the mic and from then I got the bug!

Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
My musical influences growing up were Stevie Nicks, Simon and Garfunkel and Coldplay, my influences now are Lana Del Rey, Lorde and Florence and the Machine.

How would you describe your sound?
I would describe my sound as indie pop/off pop!

What is your latest single called and what was the influence behind it?
My latest single is called ‘Black Maria’ and it’s now out on Spotify! The idea came from the film ‘Blanche Fury’ that my great great Uncle Cecil McGivern wrote the screenplay for. It’s a film that really inspired me to write and I had the idea to change the plot twist and era of the film for the song.

What’s your local music scene like?
There’s quite a lot of music venues in my area and I’ve been singing around the local bars since the age of 17!

What do you have planned for the next 12 months? Any albums or festivals?
I’ve done some amazing festivals so far including Pub In The Park supporting Toploader, Razorlight, Mel C and Texas, Hampton Court Festival supporting Jools Holland, Oceanfest supporting Toploader and Razorlight again! I’m really looking forward to playing Henley Festival again this year where I will be supporting Grace Jones. I’m also playing Carfest North and South this year, which I can’t wait for!

I’m currently recording my album now. I am so excited about the songs that are going to be on it! I can’t wait to release it, which should be around the end of summer!

Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
I have always wanted to collaborate with Chris Martin from Coldplay!

Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
I love to wear stiletto heels as I’m 5’3, so very small and love having that extra bit of height! But it comes at a price as there were some little holes on a stage I was once performing on and I slightly caught the heel in one but thankfully managed to not get it properly caught and go flying! I’m still waiting for the day I trip on stage as I am very clumsy!

What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
I write quite dark music but my personality is the opposite! I’m always laughing and joking and have the loudest laugh ever!
