Every Monday we will be bringing you an unsigned singer or band as part of our Independent Music Monday feature. This week, we caught up with James from unsigned band Simple Fiction find out more about them…
Who is in the band, how did you meet, where are you from and how did you come up with the band name?
Simple Fiction are made up of James Evans, Carlos de los Santos and Tom Blunt, who all met whilst at uni in Guildford. We struggled coming up with a name initially because all of our suggestions already existed, so then it was basically trial and error with different variations of names we liked until we found one which didn’t already exist.
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
My (James) influences have always been fairly Indie Rock based, I grew up listening to bands like Razorlight and The Strokes and I still listen to loads of artists like that today, at the minute I’m listening to bands like The Magic Gang and Vista Kicks.
How would you describe your sound?
Our sound can be described as undeniably Indie, trying to keep things simple and loud, hiding sad themes under catchy choruses.
What is your latest single called and what was the influence behind it?
Our latest single is called 'Tall Stories', and it focuses on the anxiety surrounding an uncertain future and the reluctance to try and face it head on. Our songs are mostly about me being anxious about things. We recently put out a lyric video for the single too, we used symbols and animation instead of just words and its pretty fun so please watch it!
What’s your local music scene like?
Guildford has a solid music scene, there is a couple of really cool venues there and its not too far from London so there’s always that huge scene we can go to!
What do you have planned for the next 12 months? Any albums or festivals?
Our latest single was the first release of three that we have lined up over the next few months which we are very excited about! We will be announcing more gigs over the summer very soon as well.
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
I think working with someone like Kevin Parker from Tame Impala would be a really eye opening experience because the guy is a genius. Think we’re pretty far off that stage currently…
Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
For one of our first shows Carlos smashed a glass whilst flipping a beer matt before a gig, which then cut his hand wide open. After he stopped bleeding he bandaged himself up and powered through. He did a great job though so everything turned out okay.
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about your band?
We have just put our new single out 'Tall Stories' and we would really appreciate it if you checked it out!
