Every Monday we will be bringing you an unsigned singer or band as part of our Independent Music Monday feature. This week, we caught up with Jords find out more about him…

Where are you from and how did you first get into music?
Parents are from the Caribbean, but I grew up in Croydon, South London. My dad used to be in a jazz band and my cousin is a songwriter, so they always taught me about music and how to create melodies, but my environment of just being around people who would freestyle in class and whatnot got me into creating my own lyrics.

Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
Growing up, Wretch 32 was a big influence on what I created. Pharrell, 50 Cent, Nate Dogg, loved listening to them. Then you’ve got the greats like MJ, Marvin Gaye, many many more.

How would you describe your sound?
Hmmm... if I had to put a genre on it (I don’t like doing that to be honest), Hip-Hop/R&B. But there’s so much more to it.

What is your latest single called and what was the influence behind it?
Well I’ve got my latest EP out which is called 'After The Ends'. It’s the final piece of a trilogy, as my last two projects are 'Before We Begin' and 'Means To An Ends'. It’s like a coming of age story I guess, very much inspired by my background and upbringing.

What’s your local music scene like?
Vibrant man! Everyone is doing so well, you’ve got the likes of Stormzy, Cadet, Raye, Hardy Caprio, all from my ends man. It’s sick to see.

What do you have planned for the next 12 months? Any albums or festivals?
Haha, I’m working on a couple of things. I’m quite secretive with what I do.

Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
Jaz Karis! She is probably my favourite artist at the moment.

Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
Well one of my managers is also my drummer... I dunno how funny this is... but he always wants me to cry on stage... I look at him throughout shows and when it gets to an emotional, quite heartfelt song he always looks at me and just quietly says “are you gonna cry?” I’m a big man though, haven’t cried yet.

What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
I think everything I want people to know about me is in the music.
