Every Monday we will be bringing you an unsigned singer or band as part of our Independent Music Monday feature. This week, we caught up with Kit Rice find out more about him...
Where are you from and how did you first get into music?
My name is Kit Rice and I am an RnB/Funk artist from South East London. I first got into music by playing the violin at my primary school here in London. Music is and will always be the most important thing to me in the world! I love all different types of music and I have studied at a lot of different places to gain a much information as possible about all of the different genres.
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
I grew up listening to Prince, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Lady Gaga, Brandy Norwood, Amy Winehouse, Beyonce, Rihanna, Snoop Dogg, Vivaldi, Mozart, Bach, Nat King Kole, Missy Elliot, Dubstep, Drum & Bass, Hip Hop, Grime... Just to name a few. I love music that is passionate and inspiring! I love a strong message and story to keep me gripped, whether that is instrumental or has a huge vocal running through it.
How would you describe your sound?
My sound is RnB/Funk. I always start out by writing a song on my piano. Sometimes I will hear it in my head before I get to the piano and sometimes the piano helps me realise what I'm trying to write about lyrically. For the production I love combining all of my influences and creating something individual and different.
What is your latest single called and what was the influence behind it?
My latest single is called 'Konfidence' and it is out on Monday! I like to release something every Monday on my YouTube channel, sometimes 2 in a week. I'm in the middle of releasing my debut album 'KONFIDENCE'. This song brings the whole album together with a message of confidence and believing in yourself. Sometimes, people can see confidence as a negative trait in a person and try to put those that possess it down. This song is a protest against that attitude, as is the entire album as a whole. Confidence can be difficult to maintain so, I want to spread the message that whoever you are and whatever you do, be proud and confident in that. Confidence in your work, your relationships, in your appearance, your personality, your race, your sexuality and in anything that makes you, you! Don’t let the fear of what others think hold you back and stop you from being the best version of yourself. This song will have you strutting your stuff, singing into your hairbrush and vogueing in the mirror. Living your best life as your authentic self, with Konfidence.
I love organic instrumentation - music that can be performed with a full live band. I’ve always been inspired by artists like Prince, Luther Vandross, Jamiroquai and in more recent years Justin Timberlake, Amy Winehouse and Bruno Mars. So, I’ve taken that older sound and combined it with a more modern funk sound. Melodic, catchy synth lines that will be running through your head all day with a heavy pulsing bass line that will have even the most straight laced old lady bobbing her head. The mood is celebratory dance party. Imagine, you’re in the middle of the crowd at your local pride festival, spiced rum and coke in hand, hands to the sky - that’s the vibe.
What’s your local music scene like?
London is an explosion of all different types of music and we all support one another!
What do you have planned for the next 12 months? Any albums or festivals?
My album is due to drop on JUNE 25th and I am throwing a release party at the 229 on Great Portland Street! Some of my favourite artists from London are going to be supporting me (Shay La Rose, Lula Sound, Olly Chamberlain) and then I am going to play the whole album from start to finish! To play us out we are having some amazing drum and bass djs/producers, playing some dirty ass underground filth. You can buy tickets now at http://showsnear.by/KitAlbumLaunchTicket ! It's going to be a madness!
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
I would love love love to collaborate with Brandy! She’s vocally EVERYTHING!
Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
We always have a ball at my gigs! I love to get people involved in my performance, whether that's clapping or singing along with the song! At my last gig at the Bedford in Balham, my sister brought along her friend who got extremely excited about the song, did a magnificent spin on the spot and just as the room went quiet, he fell backwards through the fire escape. Anything and everything can happen at my gigs, but that was one of the funniest for sure.
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
I want them to know that everything I do comes from a place of peace and love, as a proud gay man. I am so passionate about music and sharing music and I am so appreciative of the fans I have already! They have stuck by me even when I had no one turning up to my shows and I will never let you down. I will never stop sharing my story and reaching the people in my community around the world who need me. I always reply to every message and comment that is sent to me. I am yours forever. KIT
