Awkward Z

Every Monday we will be bringing you an unsigned singer or band as part of our Independent Music Monday feature. This week, we caught up with Awkward Z to find out more…

Where are you from and how did you first get into music?
Originally, I’m from South Africa but I moved to Ireland when I was 5. I live in Waterford for college but I’m from Wexford. I got into music after seeing that a mutual friend was a rapper and I thought that I can do it too.

Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
Before 2008 I listened to rock & pop music, but growing up I listened to Beastie Boys, Lil Wayne, Eminem, Wu-Tang Clan, Cypress Hill etc. and my influences now are Kendrick Lamar, J. Cole, Drake, Migos etc.

How would you describe your sound?
I think my sound has a combo of “Mumble Rap” flows with real lyrical content but I'm always experimenting with sounds.

Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
There's too many to name but yes for sure, the Irish music scene is filled with a lot of amazing artists, I love it.

Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
In 1st year of college I entered a local Take Me Out fundraiser just to perform my newest song at the time on stage, the girls all ended up pressing their buttons, so I didn’t get a date, but it was one of my best performances to this day and the feedback was amazing.

What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
With my music I try to evoke emotions in the listeners, there’s life in the lyrics so listen close. After listening to Awkward Z I hope that my lyrics inspired you or resonated with you or made you feel something at least. I’m not your stereotypical rapper.
