Every Monday we will be bringing you an unsigned singer or band as part of our Independent Music Monday feature. This week, we caught up with Yurosa to find out more...
Where are you from and how did you first get into music?
I'm originally from Leeds and now live in Trinidad and Tobago in the Caribbean, I've sang and been interested in music as long as I can remember but really started to perform and write songs at around the age of 17.
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
Growing up I loved Michael Jackson as a lot of kids in the 80s did, Stevie Wonder and Prince were other influences that I still pay a lot of attention to now. More recent influences include Sia, One Republic, Disclosure and John Mayer.
How would you describe your sound?
It's a mix of Electronic synth, Rnb melodies and pop vocals, Stevie and Prince have a lot to answer for haha.
What is your latest single called and what was the influence behind it?
The new track is called 'Own Me', it's a song about infatuation and the lyrics explore that from a positive and negative point of view. It's the final track from my debut EP entitled "Lost and Found" and also has an official music video that can be found on social media and my official website.
What’s your local music scene like?
The local music scene in Trinidad is heavily influenced by Soca music (which is the local dance music), Reggae and Dancehall music. I don't fit in at all (laughs) but people appreciate what I do as something different and similar to what they hear from the states so it works. There are lots of outlets for music for such a small place, with live music venues, Concerts and of course Carnival.
What do you have planned for the next 12 months? Any albums or festivals?
The EP is the first half of an album so I'm currently working on the second part, it will consist of another 5 tracks and will cover new themes and expand on what "Lost and Found" Part 1 started, I also hope to play more live shows, and I'm sure a trip to the UK to perform for my fans there won't be too far away.
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
I think Ryan Tedder from the band One Republic, he's a great song writer and we share a lot of the same influences so I think it would be pretty natural to create and produce with him.
Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
Lots haha, I've toured all over the world and met so many great (and interesting) people. As for stories there aren't really any I can share here as that might get me in trouble but it's always fun on the road.
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
That they can listen to the new EP and latest track "Own Me" on iTunes, Spotify, Amazon Music, Google Play, Tidal and all social media streams now. All I really want is for more people to hear the music and connect with me online, that's what it's all about.
