Every Monday we will be bringing you an unsigned singer or band as part of our Independent Music Monday feature. This week, we caught up with CHOZE to find out more…
Where are you from and how did you first get into music?
I am from London England and my first approach to music was really when I started attending pirate radio sets years back. Going every week practising my lyrics with other up and coming crews was the motivation to keep me focus to enter more seriously in the music industry.
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
My music influences were from Michael Jackson to The Prodigy to So Solid Crew. I was a follower and was easily influenced by any artist that created their own movement. I felt you had a lot of bulls to go through the trenches to believe in what YOU believe in. Which is why the artist that influenced me today are Dizzee Rascal, Wiley, Lil Simz, Gorillaz, Stormzy, Boy Better Know. They have an impact on me by how they structure their brand and sound. They just do them which I love.
How would you describe your sound?
My sound is very alternative rap, you can’t penguin-hole it. My thought and recording process goes by one rule - follow your heart. Doesn’t matter how it sounds, if I honestly feel it’s something perfect for the CHOZE brand then I move forward with it. Plain and simple.
What is your latest single called and what was the influence behind it?
My latest single is called “Nothing To Lose” and it’s basically about what it says on the tin. When I wrote this record, we were going through some difficult times whether it was Grenfell or Brexit or the high rate of gun and knife violence. I felt we were positioned in a very dark moment so I wanted to speak up. Not just for me but for those civilians that do bring good deeds to their communities and still are suffering. We’ve been battered for too long so I felt I had “nothing to lose” by speaking out my points on the current state of affairs we’re living in today.
What’s your local music scene like?
My music scene is very healthy right now. More alternative acts are coming together to continue a movement where there’re no rules to being a creative. Like acts such as Foreign Pack, Knighthood, 808INK, Kojey Radical etc we are not stopping to create our interpretation of art.
What do you have planned for the next 12 months? Any albums or festivals?
Looking to drop my first mini album in the new year. So I want to release a few records from the mini album to create the buzz again. Festivals are still to be announced but I’m looking forward to be performing again especially the new material.
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
I would love to do an EP right now with Plan B. I think his new record is brilliant and I’ve respected him as an artist for years. But right now I’m working with everyone I wanted to work with. Cassell The BeatMaker (The Streets), Skolz, Shai Sevin. These guys are the future of sound. Look into them.
Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
No funny stories just as yet but I’ll keep you posted lol
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
You’ll get the truth and nothing but the truth. My music is as honest as I can be. I will be here for a while so readers follow the movement and watch how the art unfolds.
