Every Monday we will be bringing you an unsigned singer or band as part of our Independent Music Monday feature. This week, we caught up with unsigned singer Jocee to find out more...

Where are you from and how did you first get into music?
I’m from a little village near the end of the central line called Theydon Bois in Essex.
From listening to Jazz FM in the car.

Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
Growing up- Julie London, Whitney Houston and Stevie Wonder.
Now- Jill Scott, Gregory Porter, Lianne La Havas and Ben L’oncle.

How would you describe your sound?
Souly Pop some say a mixture between Joss Stone and Jocelyn Brown.

What is your latest single called and what was the influence behind it?
It's called ‘Where On The Map’ I wrote it as a wedding present for my brother and fiancé. They then asked me to sing it for their first dance and it inspired me to spread love further.
We filmed a short film-esque music video for this which is on my youtube channel; I hope warms your heart!

What’s your local music scene like?
I end up performing more east London than Essex because my band are based in London. We love doing shows at The Blues Kitchen where everyone dances like it’s back in the day.

What do you have planned for the next 12 months? Any albums or festivals?
I plan to share my new EP ‘They Say’ with as many Soul music lovers!
I’m loving the festival season and my favourite part of the journey is the shows with my band but I’ll get back into writing my next EP when the rain comes. I plan to launch my next record in February.

Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
I would love to write with Jamie Cullum or Jill Scott or Raphael Saadiq in my dreams, but I’ve many madly talented friends I plan to collaborate with for my next project!

Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
I recently got stung by 2 wasps during a performance and just carried on the show with a very swollen and red leg! Plus I’m a bit of a spontaneous performer and end up doing silly things. Like wrapping myself in the mic cord to the extent of falling over or deciding to eat a gifted sweet in-between verses ending up tongue tied!

What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
That all 3 of my records are on all music platforms Spotify, Apple Music, Soundcloud etc and I would love for you have a listen and enjoy some Soul for your souls!

You can find out more about Jocee at her website or via Apple Music, Facebook, Instagram, Soundcloud, Spotify, Twitter or YouTube.
