Robbie Zereka

Every Monday we will be bringing you an unsigned singer or band as part of our Independent Music Monday feature. This week, we caught up with Robbie Zereka to find out more…

Where are you from and how did you first get into music?
I’m an Irish born boy, now living in London. I sang in choirs and musicals as a child and I have been in a couple of bands since moving to London before going solo after starting uni at BIMM (The British and Irish Modern Music Institute).

Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
My mam listened to a lot of Smokie and Patsy Cline when I was growing up and I remember loving Tracy Chapman’s first album as a child (as well as most pop music)!

My current influences are The Cardigans, T. Rex, Goldfrapp and Pixies.

How would you describe your sound?
Emotive yet rousing alternative rock.

What is your latest single called and what was the influence behind it?
'Favourite Feelings' is a song I wrote to help a friend who suffers from depression. The song came out on 8th August.

What’s your local music scene like?
London is so rich culturally and there is so much variety on the scene. I have seen some of the best gigs of my life for totally free in small venues in London. Most of these venues are under threat of closure so if you love music I’d recommend taking a chance on some smaller venues as there are so many amazing under the radar acts out there to discover.

What do you have planned for the next 12 months?
I have four more songs recorded which I will release as singles over the next year or so. My next song, 'Bloodshot' and the accompanying music video will be out by the end of this year. Also, I am planning on playing a bunch more festivals next year after our recent debut festival performance at LoveBN1fest in Brighton this summer.

Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
KT Tunstall. I have loved her music for years and finally got to see her live at Glastonbury last year. She is unreal!

Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
Just the usual stories like almost knocking my teeth out with a mic after forgetting to take it off the stand on time mid song!

What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
I love marmite.
