Bran Mazz

Every Monday we will be bringing you an unsigned singer or band as part of our Independent Music Monday feature. This week, we caught up with Bran Mazz to find out more…

Where are you from and how did you first get into music?
I’m originally from Birmingham, but now live in London. I first got into music through my Dad. He was a professional musician for around 30 years. Being around him and his Brothers (who are also musicians) from a young age encouraged me to play. I first started playing Saxophone in the family band around 9/10.

Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
My influences growing up were Michael Jackson, Prince, Stevie Wonder and James Brown. As I got older I gained inspiration from more modern artists such as: Frank Ocean, Pharrell, Calvin Harris and Justin Timberlake.

How would you describe your sound?
I would put it under the umbrella of Pop, with influence of Soul and Funk.

What is your latest single called and what was the influence behind it?
The latest single is called ’Twonight’ (2nd out of 4 releases from the Reattach EP) I came up with the idea when I was driving back to Birmingham from uni in Guildford, stuck in Friday traffic. I had a really clear melody and Bassline which I recorded on my voice notes on my iPhone (I do this a lot). I later developed lyrics to melody. The inspiration came from being out in bars / clubs seeing couples together just enjoying each other’s company, ignoring everyone else around them. I really liked the idea how two people can be so immersed in each other on a night out.

What’s your local music scene like?
There are a lot of talented musicians and upcoming artists in Birmingham. Plus loads of great small venues in the city centre!

What do you have planned for the next 12 months? Any albums or festivals?
Currently I’m in talks with a few festivals which should be announced in the upcoming few months. As for music, I’m planning to release another large body of work next year, collaborating with loads of different artists.

Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
I’d love to work with Pharrell. I find him such an interesting guy. From his production and songwriting all through to his fashion, he’s a real individual.

Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
I once fell off the stage but managed to recover and somehow style it out landing on my feet. I’m unsure still if people knew 😂

What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
I love sensation chilli crisps. That’s the way to my heart. The obsession is real, maybe an endorsement in the future 👀😂
