Joe Ramsey

Every Monday we will be bringing you an unsigned singer or band as part of our Independent Music Monday feature. This week, we caught up with Joe Ramsey to find out more…

Where are you from and how did you first get into music?
I am from Middlesbrough, in the heart of Teesside. First got into music by being forced to play piano at 11 from my Mum, and eventually got my way and picked up a guitar for the first time at 15. Involved in bands from that age and went on my own at around 21/22.

Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
I listened to a lot of Beatles growing up and loved classic rock i.e. Guns 'n' Roses etc. But I discovered John Mayer at around the time I started learning guitar and he's my absolute icon. Also influenced by Ryan Adams and Ben Howard, Foy Vance etc.

How would you describe your sound?
It's hard, mellow indie pop may be the best way to describe it. For fans of Kodaline, James Bay, even Ryan Adams (am I allowed to affiliate my sound with one of my main influences?)

What is your latest single called and what was the influence behind it?
My newest single 'Shelter', was released last month, December 14th. Shelter is about wanting to be that person who makes the man/woman they're after happy. To be their comfort, their 'go to', and the word 'Shelter' is used in a manner to represent that happy, comforting place, and the difficulties one goes through to get there.

What’s your local music scene like?
Class! Dylan Cartlidge and Avalanche Party have just been announced for SXSW, which is amazing. Getting better every year.

What do you have planned for the next 12 months? Any albums or festivals?
The plan is to release more music in a string of singles and remixes, hopefully with some nice gigs along the way!

Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
John Mayer obviously, but there are too many to name.

Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
I do have a tendency to mess my own lyrics up, but for the most part, people don't know the lyrics to my own songs so I get away with it! I'm getting better though.

What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
I'm left handed on guitar, which I guess is pretty unusual, Ben Howard inspired me to play through his way of playing.
