Every Monday we will be bringing you interviews with unsigned UK or Ireland artists for Independent Music Monday. Recently we caught up with VILDE to find out more...
Where are you from and how did you first get into music?
I'm from Norway, born and raised at Tjøme (small island south from Oslo). I'm on my 3rd year of studying music (songwriting and performance) at LIPA. My first introduction to music was the clarinet, that I played for 5 years from the age of 7. Then I started singing in various gospel choirs for about 10 years, played the guitar and wrote songs in my bedroom.
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
My biggest influence when growing up was Celine Dion. I practiced every day trying to copy her techniques and the way she was singing, as I thought she was such an amazing vocalist (and still is). Now, I listen to several artists, so I can't really say I have one influence, but I do love Zara Larsson a lot (Swedish artist). She's got such a cool voice and attitude, I just love her vibe.
How would you describe your sound?
I would describe my sound as pop, but with a hint of urban sound to it. I love urban music, so that influences me a lot when writing, however I also love pop, so I try to combine those two genres into something interesting and cool.
What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
My latest release is called “Freeze”, and I wrote it in London with James Lewis and Victoria Horn. The idea behind the song is about wanting to freeze the moments that count and being present in the moment of reality, rather than lost on social media. We spend so much time on our phones and in the social media world in today's society, that we sometimes forget to be present and enjoy the moments with the people we are surrounded by. That's why I wanted to write this song, to remind people of being more present.
What’s your local music scene like?
My local music scene is characterized by a lot of pop music, but as well a lot of urban. Urban is coming more and more into the music scene, mainly from Norwegian rappers. We got amazing artists doing it great outside of the border such as Sigrid, Kygo, Alan Walker, Astrid S etc. I'm proud of representing Norway, we produce a lot of great music.
What do you have planned for the next 12 months? Any albums or festivals?
As I only got 3 singles out, I'm planning to continue releasing more singles in 2019 as well as building my audience and play live a lot. Then I would look at perhaps an EP or an album in 2020. I'm playing some festivals and other events this summer, but not much that is confirmed yet. In April I'm doing my first show in the UK, playing the 2ube extra festival in Liverpool.
Is there anyone you'd love to collaborate with?
There are so many people I would love to collaborate with. As a writer I would love to work with Ed Sheeran, Julia Michaels, Lauv etc. Would also love to do a song with Ariana Grande, Cardi B or Post Malone.
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
Hm, I guess that must be that I'm 100% independent and that I'm managing everything myself. I've got my own label that I'm releasing my music through, I'm doing all PR myself, getting sessions scheduled, being the MD of my own live project ++ a lot more work. Only thing I don't do, is booking, as I'm signed to “Linje 2” in Oslo.
