Every Monday we will be bringing you interviews with unsigned UK or Ireland artists for Independent Music Monday. Recently we caught up with Bethia to find out more...
Where are you from and how did you first get into music?
I am a 20 year old artist from Reading. I have loved singing and performing from a very young age and have always known that this was what I wanted to do as a career. I was part of a musical theatre/performance school from 6-18 years old and I wrote my first song at 11.
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
Growing up I listened to a lot of pop music; artists such as Kelly Clarkson, Leona Lewis and JoJo. I then became very interested in the creative process of writing songs; Tori Kelly was the main artist that sparked this excitement inside of me. I would also listen to a lot of music that my parents enjoyed such as Eva Cassidy, Whitney Houston and Tracy Chapman. I still listen to these artists frequently however over the past couple of years I have discovered my love for R&B and Soul music. At the moment, I am hugely inspired by artists such as Ella Mai, Kiana Ledé, Sinead Harnett and Alina Baraz. The work of these incredible female artists has helped shape so many of the songs I am currently writing and developing.
How would you describe your sound?
I would describe my sound as a fusion of R&B, Soul and Pop music.
What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
My latest release is a song called “Nothing” that came out on the 5th of April 2019. It was a song that I wrote quite quickly. I had a very simple chord progression to start with and the rest of the song just flowed. I didn’t actually write the song from personal experience but it seems to be the one that I connect the most with emotionally when I perform live.
What’s your local music scene like?
Reading has a music scene but it isn't really a place I have hugely explored for this. Although, I have been more so a part of the Guildford music scene over the past couple of years which has been just amazing.
What do you have planned for the next 12 months? Any albums or festivals?
This year I am hoping to continue creating and releasing as much music as I can. I have been experimenting with a new style/sound over the past few months and working with some great producers and musicians to help my visions come to life. I feel like my current artistic influences are really reflecting in the music I'm making at the moment. I would also love to do as many gigs as I can and perform at festivals if I get the opportunity to.
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
It would be a dream to collaborate with any one of my favourite artists but if I had to choose one at the moment it would be Ella Mai. I have been a follower of hers since she started uploading singing covers to Instagram. She is now breaking America and won her first Grammy a couple of weeks ago.
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
That new music is very much in the making and I'm so excited for people to hear it!
