Every Monday we will be bringing you interviews with unsigned UK or Ireland artists for Independent Music Monday. Recently we caught up with Hidden Depths to find out more…
Who is in the band, how did you meet, where are you from and how did you come up with the band name?
Hidden Depths are a two-piece rock band formed in Camden Town, London. Ever since meeting whilst studying at university in London, Matt Wilson (Guitar/Vocals) and Dan Murch (Drums/Backing Vocals) have been creating “garage rock with fuzzy punk energy; throwing out a brand of raw indie punctuated with big bluesy riffs”. Though Matt is originally from North Wales, and Dan from West Yorkshire, we started playing together for fun while living in uni halls, and ended up taking our name from an Iceberg-design poster that Dan had up on his wall (which inspired our current T Shirt design too!).
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
We both listen to all sorts at the moment - from rock to hip hop, electronic to ambient. Both of us grew up with indie rock like Arctic Monkeys, The Strokes, The Black Keys, etc etc but also influences from our parents like The Beatles, Black Sabbath, old blues musicians, too many to name!
How would you describe your sound?
As a magazine review once said - we make a lot of noise considering there's only two of us (though we still don't know if that was a compliment). We're somewhere in between punk and rock, with a lot of blues influences and more than our fair share of fuzz added in. Every song is hyper-energetic and made with a live audience in mind.
What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
We just released a brand new single called Gaslight, which is all about not knowing what to believe. We shot a music video for it which really encompasses this idea which we think people will really love.
What’s your local music scene like?
We're currently based up in Newcastle. The music scene is great - a lot of smaller venues where the energy of the crowd really makes up for the size of venue, and quite a few bigger, more commercial venues which are really fun to play.
What do you have planned for the next 12 months? Any albums or festivals?
We're currently playing a string of shows around the country. We just played a show down in London and we'll be in Sheffield next week promoting our single. We also have a handful of shows up in Newcastle and a whole load of singles lined up to release and promote throughout the year!
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
There's too many to name! There are so many bands around that we love right now, mostly we'd like to get on tour with them!
Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
At our first headline show not only did Dan do a strip tease (only from jeans down to shorts) to a dismayed audience, but we also had a very embarrassing moment when we were asked to play an encore we hadn't prepared for - the only thing we could think of was a joke cover of the Harry Potter theme. Never again.
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about your band?
We love to play to really energetic crowds and get wild on stage - so if you're interesting in getting a bit crazy definitely come to one of our shows!
