Every Monday we will be bringing you interviews with unsigned UK or Ireland artists for Independent Music Monday. Recently we caught up with EKKAH to find out more...
Who is in the duo, how did you meet, where are you from and how did you come up with the name?
We are EKKAH; Rebekah Pennington and Rebecca Wilson, two best friends who met at high school in the Midlands and our name derives from our names!
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
We listened to a lot of classic bands like Fleetwood Mac, Led Zeppelin, and The Rolling Stones and we would cover anything from Jimi Hendrix to The Zutons when we were growing up.
When we started going out to clubs we discovered old school disco, funk, and soul and this was where our musical influences really changed. We wanted to create the type of music that was making us dance in clubs. We listen to a bunch of different genres like R&B, old school hip hop, 90s pop bangers to gain influence to make an EKKAH track!
Our top influences at the moment are Gavin Turek, also really digging Ravyn Lena and a bit of Erykah Badu, a lot of female energy.
How would you describe your sound?
A mixture of groove, funk and pop with an aim to make you want to dance.
What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
Our latest release is called Back Seat Driver, heavily influenced by Janet Jackson and Delegation.
The track is about finding a person that gives you the freedom to give up your desire for control, you drive through the changes.
What’s your local music scene like?
We both live in London, so the music scene is amazing. There is always something on and there is a different vibe in each area of London - East has its own thing and Brixton a completely different feel, that's something we are really grateful for and probs take for granted now and again! We went to watch Franc Moody at Heaven on Wednesday, that was a sick show!
What do you have planned for the next 12 months? Any albums or festivals?
We have been releasing new music every month since January and we intend to continue this throughout the year with the result being a debut album at the end of the year/beginning of next year!
We are in the process of confirming some summer shows and festivals which we are very excited about!
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
Mark Ronson, Oh and Quincy Jones! We have been chatting to Samantha Urbani about sorting out a collab and we are all in the process of making that happen! CHK CHK CHK would be fun too!
Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
We have definitely both fallen on stage before, but you just gotta get up and do a little laugh and carry on.
Saying 'What's Up Leeds!?' when you are actually Manchester is pretty awks too.
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
We send each other around 500 WhatsApp messages per day if we aren't together and we can read each other's minds, pretty cool.
