The Love Handles

Every Monday we will be bringing you interviews with unsigned UK or Ireland artists for Independent Music Monday. Recently we caught up with unsigned Bristol band The Love Handles to find out more…

Who is in the band, how did you meet, where are you from and how did you come up with the band name?
We are 4 friends from Bristol - Danny, Elliot, Emile and Ben. We have been friends since school and formed the band after jams became songs, before Danny christened us as The Love Handles in homage to an acquaintance of ours.

Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
Growing up, everything from Kasabian and The Enemy to Blink 182 and Green Day, before honing our sound now with influences from The Cribs and mid-naughties indie/garage rock bands, as well as influences from the post-punk genre.

How would you describe your sound?
We are an abrasive indie-rock outfit channeling the intensity and vibrant energy of early-to-mid 2000s garage rock bands to produce melodic, catchy anthems with bite.

What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
Circus Stairs. It is a fast paced, aggressive direction of sound we have developed through our high-spirited live performances that compliments our energy on stage.

What’s your local music scene like?
It is fantastic, we are proud to be included and support so many talented bands in the scene that also includes some of our closest friends. We have seen so many bands from Bristol expand from small stages to festival slots and national/international tours.

What do you have planned for the next 12 months? Any albums or festivals?
We are playing Dot To Dot Festival in Bristol on May 25th, before planning and working up to releasing an EP in the summer of this year (more to come on that).

Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
Our dream would be to have an album recorded and produced by Steve Albini.

Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
Our frontman Danny has a tendency to take a wander through the crowd topless during our last song, and despite this has managed to break his guitar more times from the safety of the stage.

What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
The Love Handles do not advocate pretentiousness - we make and perform music as four down to earth friends who enjoy themselves and are not afraid to make mistakes.
