Every Monday we will be bringing you interviews with unsigned UK or Ireland artists for Independent Music Monday. Recently we caught up with unsigned Glasgow band DETER to find out more…
Who is in the band and how did you meet?
Come August DETER will consist of Jamie Logan (Vocals), Floyd Elliott (Drums), Daniel Brown (Bass) and Jonny Follan (Guitar). Our synth player Caleb is moving away soon. Jamie, Daniel and Jonny met through working together in college practice rooms and eventually became acquainted with Floyd through their old band and playing gigs with them. Eventually we needed a drummer and Floyd was the perfect person for it.
Where are you from and how did you come up with the band name?
We are from Glasgow, Scotland. The band name was something that took over a month but came with Jamie brainstorming ideas and this was the one that happened to be agreeable for everyone and wasn't already taken.
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
We answered this individually as we all come from different musical backgrounds.
Jamie - Post-Hardcore bands such as Casey, Slaves, Dayshell and Too Close To Touch but also more pop influenced artists such as PVRIS, K Flay and Blackbear. Earlier influences were Paramore and Silversun Pickups.
Jonny - Early 2000s emo and nu metal- Blink 182, Linkin Park, MCR. Modern day post hardcore bands - Casey, Being As An Ocean, Movements.
Daniel - 90s alt rock (Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Sunny Day Real Estate), post punk (Joy Division, The Cure).
Floyd - Broadside, Holding Absence, Pink Floyd and Muse.
How would you describe your sound?
A blend of modern post hardcore softened down and mixed with pop and post rock influences.
What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
Our Debut Album "Wither & Fade" was influenced from Jamie's own personal experience with Mental Health and how it correlates with a Negative Exposure to love and how Mental Health can be impacted from this Negative Exposure. This also displays the fact that everyone changes from this and aren't the same as they were before it.
What’s your local music scene like?
The local scene mostly consists of indie bands and although isn't the biggest scene in the UK it is certainly one of the most diverse in Scotland as it accommodates every style.
What do you have planned for the next 12 months? Any albums or festivals?
We have a kit of shows lined up including places we haven't played before such as Liverpool, Edinburgh and Inverness as well as a Glasgow show as part of King Tuts Summer Nights Festival. We also intend to be back in the studio recording new songs soon.
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
Jonny - Brendan Murphy, Rivers Cuomo.
Daniel - Mike Kinsilla, Frank Iero, and obviously Drake.
Floyd - Ollie Baxter, Lucas Woodland and Mark Bellamy.
Jamie - The Producers I'd like to collab with are Erik Ron, Tom Weaver, Shayley Bourget or Lucas Woodland are the only Vocalists I'd want on a DETER song.
