Every Monday we will be bringing you interviews with unsigned UK or Ireland artists for Independent Music Monday. Recently we caught up with unsigned Manchester singer Olly Flavell to find out more…
Where are you from and how did you first get into music?
I'm from Manchester UK. I think I first got into music growing up. My parents would listen to various different mix tapes they had made and it pretty much all came from there.
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
I think in the early days it had to be people like Bill Withers, Marvin Gaye, James Taylor. They all influence me now as much as back then. I do have to say one of the biggest now has to be John Mayer. I love his music.
How would you describe your sound?
What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
This is an interesting one. It's call 'Lifeline'. I always say I write music about my friends a lot and well this song is written about an experience they had. It's all about a one night stand and wrong number. I wrote from the perspective of the female too. I've already given away way too much so I'll leave it there. Haha.
What’s your local music scene like?
Manchester's music scene is incredible! It's so alive and thriving. I have to say it's on the best I know of. You can go out any night of the week and see a solo artist or band touring through the city. To anyone who hasn't been come and see what it's all about!
What do you have planned for the next 12 months? Any albums or festivals?
I'm so excited for this year! I've got 4/5 festivals lined up this summer including Kendal Calling. Which should be amazing. I'm also planning a student union tour in September. Oh and not to mention a few more singles coming out too...
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
I'd love to just sit and write a song with James Bay. I love his stuff! He seems so down to earth.
Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
I once played a covers gig at a Hen Party and got asked if I was the stripper haha. Other than that it's normally just a heckle to play Wonderwall...
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
I'm nice? Haha. Well I hope I am. But realistically, I'd like to say thank you to everyone who supports me and my music. Doing music full-time is what most people dawn and I'm honoured to everyone who helps me pay bills and do this thing called music!
