Every Monday we will be bringing you interviews with unsigned UK or Ireland artists for Independent Music Monday. Recently we caught up with unsigned Derbyshire singer Charlotte Bettson to find out more…
Where are you from and how did you first get into music?
I am from Derbyshire. Music has always been something that interested me and I’ve always wanted to sing. I used to stand up on a chair and do ‘The Charlotte Show’ to my parents when I was about 2 which was me singing and dancing. From very young I started learning my favourite songs on guitar, in middle school about age 10 I set up my first little band with lads in my year.
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
When I was growing up my musical influences were rock bands such as Paramore, Papa Roach, Linkin Park but over the years it’s changed a lot and I'm influenced by the likes of Ed Sheeran, Alessia Cara, Shawn Mendez, Nina Nesbitt and Dua Lipa.
How would you describe your sound?
I’d describe my sound as pop with a velvety edge.
What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
My latest release is called Lonely Nights (which is on the Merryn Music playlist!), I wrote it after falling in love with someone properly for the first time and it’s about that feeling of being in a love bubble.
What’s your local music scene like?
To be honest, I live in the middle of nowhere in the countryside, I'm 30 mins South of one city and 30 mins North of another, so I dip in and out of the music scenes in both cities and get the best of both worlds! I also have a small little music scene in my local community. The music scenes in the cities have more going on but they’re all supportive and friendly and there is a lot of talent!
What do you have planned for the next 12 months? Any albums or festivals?
For the next 12 months I plan to release my debut E.P which I am hoping to be out in August. I also plan to play more gigs and festivals. I have performances in Derby, Nottingham and Matlock soon including Furthest From The Sea Festival and Matlock Bath Music Festival. You can check out all my performances on my social medias and website.
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
I’d like to collaborate with Sam Fender and make an indie/pop track with him, exploring the collab of both genres! Also I’d like to collaborate with a DJ like Calvin Harris and make a proper dance anthem!
Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
I guess a funny story is that at my very first gig at my local pub, Roy Wood from Wizzard turned up, had a chat with me afterwards praising me, and said he’d let me know of any beneficial events etc. My Aunties and Uncles were getting pictures with him saying ‘eyy Christmas has come early’ little did they know the conversation I’d just had with him.
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
Without saying too much, I want readers to know that I'm not just about singing pop love songs. My upcoming E.P, out hopefully August, is about a topic which I know people struggle with, including myself in the past, and I want to help people with my music.
