Every Monday we will be bringing you interviews with unsigned UK or Ireland artists for Independent Music Monday. Recently we caught up with unsigned Scottish singer Anna Sweeney to find out more…
Where are you from and how did you first get into music?
I'm from Ayr, south west Scotland. I started teaching myself to play on my mother's piano when I was around four or five, and I wrote my first song when I was ten - I wanted to start a band, but all the other ten year olds weren't committed enough.
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
Growing up I listened to a lot of my parent's music- Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan were favourites. At 14 I discovered Taylor Swift and I've been a fan ever since. My influences now are a lot of female fronted bands like HAIM and Fickle Friends, and pop artists such as Robyn and Sigrid.
How would you describe your sound?
It's very pop! I used to get a lot of comments on the songwriting drawing influence from country music, which I'm proud of as who writes better songs than country artists?
What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
Latest release is "Way Back When" and it was influenced by the kind of wistful nostalgia there is in remembering the good times with someone, and the sad moments when you realise they're gone.
What’s your local music scene like?
Amazing! Glasgow's music scene is insane. So many amazing artists.
What do you have planned for the next 12 months? Any albums or festivals?
Over the next 12 months I'll release an EP, and we're planning to do a few festivals this summer and then ramp up the gig schedule for Autumn/Winter.
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
So many people! I'd love to work with US band The Aces, Femke Weidema, Mike Crossey... there are too many to name.
Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
I did get a 3 year old on stage when we played in Austin in March. I kept asking her name and couldn't really understand what she was saying... which was awkward.
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
I have the cutest border collie ever. He will love you forever no matter who you are.
