Every Monday we will be bringing you interviews with unsigned UK or Ireland artists for Independent Music Monday. Recently we caught up with unsigned London band Indigo to find out more…
Who is in the band, how did you meet, where are you from and how did you come up with the band name?:
Johann Meux (vocals/composer), Matt Dell’Unto (guitarist/producer), Tom Horton (bass) and Arran Birks (percussion). After we met at the summit of Everest in 2017, the drummer accidentally poured his tea flask on the bassist, so we had a massive fight, fell off the stupid mountain and landed in London. Johann is English-German, Tom is English-Irish, Matt is Italian and Arran is Martian. Johann came up with the band name because he’s not very good at coming up with band names.
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
Growing up mostly guitar based bands, then we realised there’s more to life than that instrument and started listening to everything across all genres and eras. Much more interesting! Radiohead, Kendrick Lamar, Oasis, Kanye West, The Smiths, Amy Winehouse, Aphex Twin, Tame Impala, Flying Lotus, David Bowie, Ahmad Jamal, Marvin Gaye, Abba, The Beach Boys, The La's, Chic, Coldplay, Ennio Morricone, SOPHIE… and so on.
How would you describe your sound?
At the moment pretty upbeat but also sad. Our sound is constantly evolving. Aim of the game: make something that sounds new, but is not shit. More difficult than it might seem.
What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
Our EP, which came out recently, is quite brilliantly called the ‘Please Sign Us To Your Label EP’. We came up with this name because we are utterly desperate and want to get away from the misery of our current lives. We have yet to be signed though. Help.
What’s your local music scene like?
Pretty annoying and with lots of very very average bands that won’t get anywhere (Shoreditch we’re looking at you). Maybe we’re one of them and we’re blind to it. Who knows!
What do you have planned for the next 12 months? Any albums or festivals?
In August we are going to release a new single, with another one following in the weeks/months after. Then more and more and more. Titles to be revealed soon!
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
Not really, perhaps Tyler, The Creator? Or Bernard Cribbins.
Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
Well we talk a load of bollocks and get into arguments onstage, and Tom once played the keyboard with a bone and we give away Nutella every show. We’ve got into arguments with soundguys a few times. But mostly we just play the songs and hope for the best.
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
It might not seem like it now because we’re nothing, but sometime in the next 2-3 years we will take over. We’ll be one of those artists that people really love across the globe, and then they get too big and people who are usually called Jake and usually live in the West Midlands and get trashed on Strongbow Dark Fruit will comment on a Facebook post saying “load of old pretentious shite” and we’ll say something in an interview that will create a scandal and the tide will turn against us. Our careers will be over and when we’re 50-something we’ll go on a 2020’s revival tour. So this is the calm before the storm.
