Every Monday we will be bringing you interviews with unsigned UK or Ireland artists for Independent Music Monday. Recently we caught up with unsigned singer AikJ to find out more…
Where are you from and how did you first get into music?
I was born in Nigeria, but I grew up in Blanch well Castleknock actually. I've always had music heavily around me growing up but I decided to get into actually making music in my 3rd year of College.
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
Musically I always looked up to the likes of Timbaland's production, a lot of Usher and any R&b the 90s threw at me. My influences now are experiences around me, artists that I listen to but it's such a wide range of music at the moment that I can't really pinpoint it.
How would you describe your sound?
Normally I'd answer this question by saying R&b/pop or say I have no sound which in itself is true, cause I don't think there's such a thing as someone's 'sound' these days rather than style, that's sort of more evident with the more music you put out and people being vigilant about your growth. But for arguments sake I'll label it Alternative r&b.
What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
One Last Time is the latest release it's from my upcoming EP 1992. I just wanted to highlight a little thing in relationships where communication lacks and intentions aren't set from the get-go, makes it hard to get closure when something is left in the air or is ended abruptly without knowing it was coming. Trying to salvage the good moment.
What’s your local music scene like?
It's in a really good space at the moment, slowly and surely the eyes on the scene are creeping in and we're all sort of upping the game to give the best quality and taking things a lot more serious.
What do you have planned for the next 12 months? Any albums or festivals?
So far I'm focused on putting out this EP and making more music, hopefully a show to celebrate the EP cause it was a bit of a struggle to get it done. An album would be something great but I wanna see the growth this EP salvages first.
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
Anyone that's creative and wants to work with me to be honest. It would be great to do a song with like Nao, Labrinth or Sinead Harnett or something.
Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
I've had to sign a guy's butt cheek before at a show lol. That was a while back though and I think he was drunk.
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
That I'm a jiggy creative.
