Every Monday we will be bringing you interviews with unsigned UK or Ireland artists for Independent Music Monday. Recently we caught up with unsigned singer Host to find out more…
Where are you from and how did you first get into music?
I am from Ireland! It's okay here, although it would be much better if there was a roof over it haha. I don't remember ever "getting into" music, I feel like it's just always been a part of my life. I do however have a very vague memory of being at a house when I was really little, maybe 3 or 4 years old, and I'm pretty sure it was my first time ever seeing a guitar in real life. I was totally memorized by it and I knew I had to get one of my own! I don't remember anything else about the day, the place or even who I was with, just the guitar :)
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
My musical influences growing up up? Ugh... Let's not go back too far hahaha! In my early teens I listened to a lot of Inme, Paramore, My Chemical Romance, Nirvana that sort of thing and I still would listen to a lot of that stuff but at the moment I'm listening to No Rome - Crying In The Prettiest Places, what a great EP that is!! Diiv, always gives me such great vibes, patiently awaiting the new album! Also the likes of The Japanese House and Gus Dapperton.
How would you describe your sound?
I find it so hard to describe my own sound, I think it's because I just go with the flow and and I end up with this sound that always surprises me, but ballpark I would say synthpop, indie kind of vibes.
What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
My latest release was 'Crying for Days', there was a couple of things that influenced this one. It's still sort of a sore subject and I don't really like to talk about it too much if I'm being completely honest. Essentially it is about loss and being in denial about something that you subconsciously know is inevitable. It's crazy like, you can have your whole life planned out and it can just change with the click of a finger! You can't really plan your life, just take it day by day.
What’s your local music scene like?
There is no local music scene where I live. I think there is maybe 3 or 4 local cover bands that play in the local venues, but I don't mind that too much. I just sit in my little bubble, write sad songs and produce them at home. That's what makes me happy :)
What do you have planned for the next 12 months? Any albums or festivals?
12 months! haha day 👏 by 👏 day!! Just kidding, obviously I have some new music in the pipeline and when there's new music there's always going to be a new video because I love the visual element to music!
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
Collaboration is something that has just never crossed my mind, but I guess it would have to be an artist with the same views and passion.
Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
I actually don't have any funny stories from any live shows! Someone needs to come to a show and make a scene!!
