Kath & The Kicks
Every Monday we will be bringing you interviews with unsigned UK or Ireland artists for Independent Music Monday. Recently we caught up with Kath from unsigned Leeds band Kath & The Kicks to find out more…
Who is in the band, how did you meet and where are you from?
Kath Edmonds - Lead guitar / Vocals
Shaneen Mooney - Bass / Backing Vocals
Matt Larkin - Drums
Shaneen and I have known each other through the Leeds Music Scene for a number of years and jumped at the chance of playing together. We were introduced to Matt through another local music scene contact, he brings a lot of experience with him and of course is an ace drummer.
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
For me - my favourite band of all time and a huge influence on me musically is Skunk Anansie. We all like heavy music, alternative music, but it's really broad. Anything that's good! Anyone with a decent message.
How would you describe your sound?
Strong, loud and intense. It's different, heavy and catchy.
What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
LET IT OUT. This song was written early 2018 and focuses on the frustrations of interactions with other people. The 'bite your tongue' moment getting on top of you. Leave it long enough and something quite powerful will start to takeover: 'My devil wants to talk to you...'
What’s your local music scene like?
We all love Leeds! We're very proud of where we're from and the music scene here offers a lot - especially to new bands. There are some bars we play a lot, some clubs still don't really know us but that's ok. We have great connections down south from playing CroCroLand. It's all about the network, helping other people and being true to your own music.
What do you have planned for the next 12 months? Any albums or festivals?
Currently we are working on our next single to follow up from LET IT OUT and we have some ace Summer Tour Dates booked in - check out our events listings on FB or our website.
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
There's loads! Skin of course. Deap Vally - I think we'd really fit their vibe.
Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
Behind the scenes of the video for LET IT OUT got pretty messy with the paint! We have some snippets that'll be coming out soon :)
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
We have a lot of music to give to everyone. The collective band goal at this point in time is to get us on a decent stage at Glastonbury or onto Jools Holland... during this journey we just want to thank everyone for their support along the way. We're always happy to have a drink with someone after a gig - come and say hello!
