Every Monday we will be bringing you interviews with unsigned UK or Ireland artists for Independent Music Monday. Recently we caught up with unsigned Essex based singer Chloe Diana to find out more…
Where are you from and how did you first get into music?
I am based in Essex however I was brought up in Rochester, Kent. I first was introduced to music by my parents, my Dad is a singer and we would always sing together from a young age and my Mum just has a huge love for music and live music. Then I got into acting and because of that I would always pick the Performing Arts options at school and clubs, over time I just realised I leaned more towards the singing side of it all and wanted to focus all my attention onto music.
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
Growing up I used to listen to a lot of the legends Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder and also a lot of pop music such as JoJo and Justin Bieber. I still adore those artists now but adding to that list, I am now influenced by Bruno Mars, Alessia Cara, Ed Sheeran, Billie Eilish, and Anne-Marie. It's hard to pick a specific influence because I tend to take little bits of influence from a lot of different artists.
How would you describe your sound?
I would describe my sound as Soulful Pop.
What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
My latest release is a song called 'Other Man' that came out on Friday 19th July 2019. It's a song that I wrote when I was around 15 years old. I remember sitting in my living room in Kent, on the floor with a pen and paper and picturing this beautiful setting in my head of a guy and girl of a cliff lookout and I started writing from there. I love making up stories in my head and this song was definitely one of those stories as at that time I had no life experience yet. Over the years, the song has definitely become one of my favourite songs I've ever written and the more life experience I've collected, the closer to my heart it has become.
What’s your local music scene like?
The local music scene around here isn't really a place I have delved into just yet as I am fairly new to the area however the few open mics etc I have been to, everyone has seemed so friendly and welcoming. The talent around here is insane!
What do you have planned for the next 12 months? Any albums or festivals?
I have loads more releases ready to come out over the next year. Something that I'm really looking forward to is playing at Sundown Festival at the end of August on the VIP stage. Anne-Marie is headlining and I am absolutely buzzing!
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
I would love to work with all of my favourite artists one day, but if I had to choose something right now that I think would just be a great collab, I would probably say Lewis Capaldi. I feel like we could write something really cool together.
Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
So, I busk a lot around Essex, sometimes Brighton and a lot of funny things happen that I lose track but I always find it funny when little kids get really excited and then when their parents give them money to bring over they suddenly go really shy and hide, it's so cute too!
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
One thing I would love readers to know about me is that I am only just at the beginning of this musical journey and it's gonna get GOOD so feel free to join me because I have a lot more to come.
