Every Monday we will be bringing you interviews with unsigned UK or Ireland artists for Independent Music Monday. Recently we caught up with unsigned London singer George Balkwill to find out more…
Where are you from and how did you first get into music?
I am from East London originally but am now based in Essex, I first got into playing music at around 10 years old when my Dad played me Led Zeppelin's song "Stairway to Heaven" on guitar, I was just blown away by the melody.
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
Musically I feel I have taken influence from a lot of different artists and genres from raw folk music such as Bob Dylan, Paolo Nutini to the more rocky spectrum of Kings of Leon/Arctic Monkeys, I think I bring an engaging in-between of the two as I know the importance of having the slow, engaging songs and also the energetic upbeat melodies, but ultimately I try to make exciting and catchy music no matter the tempo or feeling.
How would you describe your sound?
If I was to describe my sound I would say it's exciting, rhythmical and cutting edge. Something that is very apparent in my music is that each song I write seems to have very different elements which makes for exciting music, I hate it when you're playing an album and every track sounds the same, it just shows such a lack of character.
What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
My latest single is called "Trouble", my influence throughout this track was brought about from a toxic relationship I was involved in a few years back so it was really reliving that moment and putting that into a song.
What’s your local music scene like?
The music scene around Essex/East London is overall pretty good in general the closer you get to Shoreditch the better it gets I find but there is definitely a great indie music scene.
What do you have planned for the next 12 months? Any albums or festivals?
Over the next 12 months I'm hoping to have two EP's out and to gain more of a fan base.
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
To be honest I would like to collaborate with a girl right now as I have a song that I've wrote which I think would be perfect, but I haven't really thought about what girl? But I would also love to collaborate with Dermot Kennedy I love his vocals.
Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
Probably the most embarrassing thing that happened to me at a gig was when I was singing and I swallowed a fly which consequently led me to having a coughing fit on stage :) Not my finest moment but luckily the crowd behind me.
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
I'd like people who take an interest in me or my music to know that I'm just a normal guy that has ups and downs, insecurities just like the rest of us but music no matter what period or hardship that I've been going through has helped me out, which is where I draw my influence, I honestly don't know what I would do without music.
