Every Monday we will be bringing you interviews with unsigned UK or Ireland artists for Independent Music Monday. Recently we caught up with Sean from unsigned Dublin band Stolen City to find out more…
Who is in the band, how did you meet, where are you from and how did you come up with the band name?
The band is made up of 3 members.
Rhythm Guitar, Mandolin & Backing Vocals are looked after by Dave McCabe.
Drums & Percussion is left in the very capable hands of Mr. Ian Bailey and myself Sean McGrath bash out the lead vocals and some rhythm guitar.
Myself and Dave met in college and hit it off right from day one and as the course progressed we started writing songs together and eventually grew into performing as a duo for college projects and original gigs around Dublin, but there was something missing we needed to add something to our sound so Dave suggested getting a drummer so he looked to a life long friend Ian to join and we have been together ever since.
We're all from Dublin, Ireland.
The band name was actually quite a spontaneous thing we were sitting in my house chatting about names and we had the word “City” in our heads for ages and it was coming to the end of the night and all of a sudden it was just blurted out “what about Stolen City” and we all fell in love with it.
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
We all have really different influences, Ian and Dave would be more into the big band and swing music but they also would listen to bands such as Mumford & Sons, Arctic Monkeys and Green Day, myself I'd be very into singer songwriters and more acoustic music, so we find a balance that really works for us and that we can all enjoy to play and write.
How would you describe your sound?
Our sound is unique, we play mainly up tempo pop, dancy, easy to listen to music with an element of rock in there too that makes us stand out from other bands, like we don't try to stand out it just happens that way and then we play live the crowd can feel our energy and see us put everything we have into every show.
What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
“Coming Home” is our latest release and the idea and kind of story behind it is basically something that a crowd can sing along to, dance along to and sing back to us.
It's fun, upbeat and just an easy listening track.
What’s your local music scene like?
Dublin is amazing for music there's so much to do from open mic nights, to busking and even just putting on a show, there's so many venues and places you can play that the music scene is massive.
What do you have planned for the next 12 months? Any albums or festivals?
We've been in studio a lot over the last few months working on something that we will be releasing over the next 12 months and it's something that we are really proud of and cannot wait to show everyone.
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
I think we'd all agree that if we had the opportunity to record and collab with one artist that it`d be Mumford & Sons.
They are a massive influence to us and they are just incredibly talented musicians and we feel a collab with them would be amazing.
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
The one thing that we want people to know is that we are just doing this because we love making music, we love playing live shows, we love meeting our fans and we just love to entertain and we want to do it for a very long time.
