Every Monday we will be bringing you interviews with unsigned UK or Ireland artists for Independent Music Monday. Recently we caught up with unsigned Bristol based artist DAN FRESHER to find out more…
Where are you from and how did you first get into music?
I'm from Swindon, based in Easton, Bristol. I first got into music through loving Basement Jaxx and Adam & The Ants.
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
Jamie Cullum and modern jazz growing up and everything hip-hop now, BROCKHAMPTON, Chance the Rapper and slowthai.
How would you describe your sound?
New single sounds like the movie Drive's soundtrack. Debut EP inspired by Tyler, the Creator and Hiatus Kaiyote.
What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
What's your local music scene like?
Buzzing! The rap open mic nights each month are great for hip-hop lovers.
What do you have planned for the next 12 months?
I've just played Sound Out festival at Komedia, Bath. Now focusing on bringing out my debut album in spring next year and making music videos when I have the time. I've also got several festivals lined up next summer with my psychedelic band that I drum for, Delight a Thief.
Is there anyone you'd love to collaborate with?
I'm simply not worthy but it'd be an honour to collaborate with Joji.
Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
With my last song on my set at Sound Out Festival, my pal and DJ Shy Kid Nation aka Sindbad accidentally hit a button and the song 'Fr3sh£R' reset to the beginning MID SONG. Luckily it wasn't in the middle of one of my verses and he panicked and jumped back into the middle of the song, but it was pure chaos and pretty funny. We handled it pretty well considering what happened! A lot of people who didn't know the song didn't even realise, they all thought it was part of the chaos of the song.
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
I'm making music a lot of the time when everyone's sleeping. I suffer from insomnia quite bad but when the world is asleep, I'll jump on making beats and mixing my tunes. It makes me very ill sometimes, but I'm a hard worker and would rather be productive than lie awake doing nothing, haha.
